Hot Rods and sales prices

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-cars-sale/877175-fs-87-carrera-3-4l-jrz-erp-recaro.html

I'm really missing a hot rod in my garage and since I sold the Carrera. I like the mods a lot on this car, and keep being drawn to it. But I think the asking price is too high for a car that cosmetically is very ordinary, and in terms of the suspension work and exhaust just really feels to my way of thinking half done. To me it hasn't gone one way or the other. Its not a sleeper or statement. I think its really a track toy co opted into a streetish car.

We all know (sadly) that Hot rods almost always return cents on the dollar and especially considering what else is on the market right now like Speedos car which although a very different thing I would far rather spend my $70k + on because it seems to my way of thinking what the ethos of a hot rod should be.

That's some creative math to get to his $70k invested. He bought the car 5 months ago. He didn't pay the $19k to rebuild the engine. I bet he didn't pay the $8k for the gearbox rebuild either. And if the LSD and upgrades are high quality why does it lack the detail of his other items?

For $65k I could buy a nice $35k g50 Carrera and spend another $30k doing whatever the heck I want and have a nicer car. This car isn't even in the same realm as Lars' car or Jeremy Dixon's blue Carrera that brought 71k on BaT last month.

When reading the ad, I thought the guy was trying to pass off a track car as a street hot rod as well.
I was chuckling.

Neither fish nor fowl, as they say. Someone has gotten very full of himself, and his car.

I couldn't agree more with both the above posters. Its an unimaginative and overpriced minor and fairly market driven re working of a Carrera. As Matt said there is some strange math going on. Overall I think I would ask what was the original goal of the car.

This poor example aside, I'm excited by the re appearance of some well executed hot rods in the classifieds. I think like everyone I too really like Speedos car, and think its a bargain. Overall gotta say I'm excited to see in that in tech there some builds going on, Shaun's comes to mind, and also what Mr Monson does with his recent purchase.

Ahh finally ... Pelican is starting to feel a little like its old a self.

It would just be easier when someone is flipping a car, that they state, "I'm flipping this so if you don't like it, move on."

No ITBs or Carbs = No Hot Rod in my book...

This is my favorite part, since Pelican doesn't allow responses in the FS threads.

Asking Price: $65,000. If you think the price is too high or you don’t like, please keep the comments to yourself.

Matt,

I wonder if you would post a couple of links to hot rods that are well executed in your opinion. Why are they well done? I've been playing with the idea of a change and trying to sort out the good from the bad has been a challenge.

Thanks

What year range or style? What do you want as the base car? A backdate with bigger engine? Or a real longnose done as an R or ST or RSR? Short hood SC-RS or IROC?

Without knowing what you are looking for its hard to help. And I clearly don't hold a corner on the market for opinions. Anyone should respond with cars they like. That's how we have a discussion instead of a lecture. My opinion is only what you pay me for it...

I think cohesion and thoroughness are key to a well executed hotrod.
For example:
-Don't put 996 sport seats in a 911R replica.
-Slapping a set of Webers and headers on an otherwise stock SC doesn't make it a hot rod.
-For god's sake, don't put turbo twists on any 911 built before '89.

pre 74 would be a ideal start but then budget starts to be an issue; backdated SC also appealing but my general impression is they are treated will less care if that makes sense. RSR and IROC style aren't my thing; looking for something more understated. Every once in a while I'll see cars labeled as a 'canyon' car. I assume that reference to locations in California and seem to be in a style that is attractive and build that is more raw (mechanically and aesthetically) - not looking for a concour car. Bigger engine probably, better build absolutely.

As far as why I am asking you specifically ... I've lurked here for a while and there are several contributors, you among them, that are incredibly knowledgeable but remain 'constructive' in their opinions. I trust your insights.

I'm a big fan of Craig's car. It started out as a '75.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/646800-my-backdated-hot-rod-project-underway.html

I think one of the reasons that 74-75 have gotten as "hot" as they have recently is the 50 states smog exempt status. Many places outside California (and Colorado) are also exempt on the 76-77. Makes the cars ripe for an engine swap from the power standpoint. And getting the longnose is really quite straight forward when it comes down to it.

The cars generally have better brakes, mounts for sway bars, aluminum control arms, 915 gearboxes without the mainshaft seal issue, galvanizing, and a bunch of little things that were factory improvements that don't need to be done to them before you dig in.

For me personally, I was really into the longnose look for a long time. I don't know what happened recently, but I'm in impact bumper mode now. The '74 I just bought had a slantnose on it, so I really was able to do just about anything with the car. I picked stock looking, with standard 1974 911S trim with a single exception, SC rear flares. Other than the 7&8" wheels, and those flares, the car is going to look stock on the outside. Long term it will be the mechanicals that get the full once over to make it drive as good as it looks. I'm just guessing, but I suspect when I am "done" I'll be into it for close to $50k. Thank dog it's only half that up front and I can put $5-10K into it yearly for the next 5 years while I enjoy it.

There's this one if you have all the money to spend:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-cars-sale/876909-fs-1968-porsche-911-sport-purpose-video.html

That's out of my income bracket by a long shot.

I like the car... a hot rod has no specific formula. Personally I would ditch the duck, thats played out for me, but hey thats just me. If he's a flipper so be it. I get it that some people dont want to buy cars from these guys. As long as he has the car titled in his name if you like the car at that price then buy it. I agree I think the price is a bit steep and I am not sure it will sell there but we'll wait and see. On the other hand if he does not have the car titled in his name I would walk. Counter party risk on open titles is not a good thing.

The created this board when they stopped letting you comment on the cars for sale board.... This board is exactly for commenting on cars without putting them on the listing.

I thought this was a really cool hot rod. If I had somewhere to keep it I would have bought it. I was amazed it didn't sell faster.

Agreed, if I could afford it I would have made a offer. Sadly though me and my wallet are more focused on the G body backdates / hot rods

I've been feeling the same about IB cars as well. I think the factory did a good job compared to other makes regarding the 5 mph bumpers.

Matt, I have a 74 parts car if you have a list of what you need to get out of slant nose town. Cheap!

I kind of like the idea of a middie with a big motor. I'm more of a q-ship kind of guy, so that would be my "hot rod" preference.
