On the other hand you can not insure track cars from damage, even skilled people wreck on the track, but you can insure your street car from the other drivers careless ness as long as it is off the track.

No offence, but if I felt this way about any car I owned, I would then lose interest in having it and would have to send it on its way.

This is valid point however I defer to my original post: the replaceability of the car is what I have a problem with. You posted that you have owned 11 911's. With today's valuations, I think that would be a tricky feat to accomplish going forward. Most of us on this forum got in before the values leapt.

The car I drive on any given day depends on the predictability of the weather, traffic, and parking conditions. If any one of those factors means I'm putting my car at undue risk of accidents/damage/vandalism, I will drive the lower valued car (daily driver s***box). It's all about risk management and capital preservation, for me.

The best thing about rising values is your ability to tell your partner that the car is an investment -- which then justifies buying more "investments" and putting extra money into the "investment" -- just don.t sell the damn thing, it has to be drivin to maintain its integrity.

Actually you can insure on track and can even do it on an event by event basis.

Ha ha - good one!

Butt, I wonder if the owners of other expensive marks (Ferrari, Lambo, Mercedes, ect.) actually drive their high-$ vintage cars or do they just park them in the garage, look at them occasionally, and high-five fellow owners about their market successes (something plenty of 911 owners are being tempted to do, it seems)?

This is my position on the subject. The ones who really get me are the ones who claim that the appreciating values have ruined the hobby and driven out the common man. These cars have never been inexpensive to own and repair EXCEPT through the fact that whole cars were undervalued.

For how many years did people buy another $6-10k 911 instead of spending that amount to rebuild the engine? It's cost close to 5 figures to rebuild an engine pretty much from 1995-2010. Only in the last 5 years has it gone up even more.

So there were all these neglected rough cars running around and guys would buy 2 or 3 of them for parts. They don't really know how good they had it is my take. And if you whine about the fact that is over now it suggests to me that you made the mistake of selling your stuff and are now bitter that you can't afford to buy it back. So blame the guys with more money who are willing to buy and maintain them now.

I paid $1000 for my first 911, a 70T. I sold it for close to $10k. I would buy it back for that in an instant right now at that price. I'd probably buy it back for twice that price and still be happy. Just because we had it really good at one point does NOT mean that now we have it bad.

As for too expensive a car to drive? Freaking Camrys and Accords cost $25-30k new these days. If my $30k 911 is too expensive to drive then there's something wrong. After nearly 6 months I take delivery of my 74 Coupe in the next 2 weeks. I cannot wait to drive and flog that sucker!!!

It's going to be my daily driver but she's free to take it any time she wants. It just happens to be her favorite color for a 911 which kind of closed the deal.

The Subaru in my signature is also technically hers. I sold mine 8 years ago to help buy our first house. Ever since then her car has been my DD. But then she gets to run around with the kid in a brand new 2016 Subaru OB so she's not complaining.

There are plenty of nice driver 911's available for less than $30k- I can't see that hobby has been ruined. I've got a 76 turbo that is going through a full resto- I would never had done that when car was worth $30k. The fact that you can restore the right car and not be upside down when done is good not bad.

Yep, same with my matching numbers 914-6,

will be too nice to really enjoy (but my GT clone will be a blast)

and my 81SC will be driven street & track, and like my other 911s, thoroughly enjoyed.

I've said it before in the bubble threads, but that's the math that ultimately led to the reality that these cars are worth more than their historical sales price. How can a 911sc be a $15k car when rebuilding the engine and gearbox is a $20k expense? It was only a matter of time until they caught up.

We saw it with the 356. We saw it with the longnoses with the infamous run in values 7-8 years ago. And now we are seeing it with IB cars and 964/993s. When the cost of major maintenance costs a certain price the values of rebuilt cars have to follow.

And when so many of them start to need $10-20k in rust repair and paint the rust free original paint cars are going to start carrying a premium.

Sounds great, Matt! The finishing touch on that car would be to install an iPad in there so she can stream episodes of True Blood while out shopping with her girlfriends - then whenever she returns, "winning" for you!!!

I could see that if I owned a '72 I wouldn't want to just drive it around and park it among the Camrys at the local supermarket, where I might have done such a thing ten years ago. Probably if I owned a '72 worth $150k, I'd sell it and buy a middie, an SC, a G50 car, a 964 and a 993.
Bingo. I bought mine 4 years back for less than you'd pay for a used late model Civic, and about half of what I paid for my daily driver TDI. (Yeah, one of those cheater cars.)

Fast forward - today the Carrera is worth more than I paid for the Golf new, to say nothing about its value today.

Yes, I still drive the 911 regularly, including to work at least once a week.

The nice bit is I can spend whatever money I need to on the Porsche, and not be underwater on it! As long as I am reasonable about my changes and updates, I'm not going to get hurt on it. Which is a far different deal from previous play cars I've had.

She doesn't need any of Eric or Bill to get her wound up. This is a woman who has taken Michael Petiford's instruction on track. Driving a 911 will wind her up plenty.

Gaspassin,

I'm up in northern Colorado. Technically it's still high desert, but not what most think of when they think desert. Here's a shot of the 200+ head elk herd I encountered yesterday while running at about 6500ft. When I first ran up on them they were 50ft uphill of me on the trail. Then they stampeded into the valley and up onto the opposite ridge. This is in a burn zone where a lightning strike in 2008 took out about 5000 acres. Mostly yucca, sage and a few cacti now that the trees are gone.
