Protecting our selves from Scammers
I wasn't sure where to post this, but i've been getting alot of interest on parts from other members with zero or very few posts. I was thinking i don't really want to sell to someone who doesn't have a history here but at the same time I really want to sell some parts to finance other parts purchases.
In the past i've always used Paypal to sell parts, is this still the best method? I've heard scammers will use a hacked Paypal account to pay for you for the parts. Then you ship the parts to scammer. Then the owner of that hacked account realizes what has happened and they are able to reverse the charges leaving you with no money and no parts. So my question is, is there a better way to protect ourselves from this happening, other that just relying on our spidey senses and not dealing with certain people?

I have some rules for buying/selling parts that might be useful for you and/or others.
My #1 rule is to not buy from or sell to anyone who doesn't have at least 50 posts on PP. And not just 50 posts in a buy/sell forum, but the posts show an active participation on the site, and some indication of the car he/she has owned or currently owns. For a scammer to fake that kind of profile would take a lot of time and effort. #2, PayPal verified account, with some means of using the PayPal e-mail address to communicate with the buyer/seller. Maybe you hack a PayPal account, but you don't hack the e-mail and PayPal and hold a conversation in the e-mail without the real owner noticing. #3 Clear, multiple photos of the parts being purchased. #4 Agreement on the terms of sale and method of shipping including insurance. |

Only ship to a Paypal verified address. If the buyer asks to ship it to a different address its a red flag and hold up for a couple days.

Not only a red flag but shipping to a non-verified address essentially nullifies any seller protection that PayPal provides.

Also always ship using a service that requires a signature. That at least partly avoids the possibility of someone claiming that they didn't receive the shipment and then filing a charge back with PayPal.

OK, thanks alot for this info, I don't know why I never thought to email the person using their Paypal email. I'm no rocket surgeon, but thats a good tip. I'm usually PMing the details etc.
I'm working out a local deal for the part I have in question now anyways, so i'll miss the paypal fun this time.
