I'm already in the process of checking out an '88, I was going to try and arrange PPI today. But it's asking $7500 more, has 120k miles, and it's black with black interior (I'd prefer the tan int.). But overall it sounds great, well cared for, longtime Porsche enthusiast owner, etc.

Maybe I'll get lucky with this one.

Black/tan's a classy combo

And it looks well sorted as well.
Good luck !

Auojack...it isnt going to get any better than this. Id buy it sight unseen, no PPi no screwing around. Its worth the risk imo and looks to be a very good car at great price. If I didnt already have 3 Id buy it right now. That car will not last more than a couple days...if that. probably already sold. Things got 7/8 Fuchs on it too . Big bucks right there.

Yeah I sent him an email as soon as I saw this. Haven't heard anything though. But the last $37k 911 I saw which looked good in pictures and print got an abysmal PPI result. Admittedly it had far fewer pictures than this ad does. If I had shown some experienced folks pictures of the other car's undercarriage and engine bay they probably would have identified many of the glaring flaws. I digress... we'll see if my number gets picked. In the meantime I'm continuing to move ahead with the '88 I found (just wish it had tan interior!).

It almost sounds to good to be true. I suppose it could have some oxidized paint issues or something but if his disclosures and description of the stuff thats been done is truthful and accurate it seems really good. The photos look good and everything pretty darn clean. Seems like the type deal flippers will try to snag and turn for a decent profit. Good luck...

One interesting thing about it is, the seller has one prior post on Pelican, selling a Cayman 2 years ago, and the wording of the two ads is identical in places. But you can also Google his name and find lots of non-car-related info about him online, so I suspect he's legit and just copy-pasted his old ad text.

The very first car I looked at seriously was being sold by a flipper, which is probably why he had a hard price floor that he couldn't go below. Turned out the engine needed a rebuild, which he didn't know when he got the car, and he was probably going to lose money selling it to me at the price I wanted.

I know its not easy. especially with the car being so far away. Im sure his email is flooded with questions, offers etc. Pobably not a great sign that he hasnt responded. Just stay patient and itll happen. I just tend to be a bit impetuous

Take it from someone who owned an '87 Carrera with a tan interior for 6 years, go for black. Tan is a pain to keep clean.

Autojack..two nice cars in Classifieds. If they don't signal a softer market, I don't know what does.

I'm not going to call you stupid. He recently updated his thread to say that he has a PPI on the car he can share. That probably means some interested buyer paid for it and gave him a copy. It wouldn't hurt to tell him you are interested and want to see a copy of the PPI. He offers it, so why not?

Maybe the car hasn't sold because it has issues. Maybe it hasn't sold because black isn't what it once was. No harm in checking it out unless you just hate black. After half a year and advertising it everywhere there may be a deal to be made.

PPI is scheduled for Monday on a:

1988 coupe, black with black interior
121k miles
Recent service including new clutch, Bilstein HD shocks, valve adjustment, turbo tie rods
Wheels refinished
Top end rebuild done at 97k miles
Cosmetically looks great, has had one respray
Conversation with the current owner indicates he is a sensible Porsche enthusiast (currently owns two others from the same era)

For once, I'm reasonable confident that the PPI will be a thumbs up and I will want to move ahead. His asking price was $46k but he says he has some flexibility and would prefer to sell to another enthusiast who will keep it as-is rather than e.g. turn it into a race car or put a weird body kit on it or something. I want to offer a fair price given the current market, not lowball or nickel and dime him. So what would you offer?

Autojack, I would offer 42,500 . Puts you in the middle of your original budget and his price and wouldnt be insulting at all.

If that car goes for over 40k at 121k miles, that will show the market is not soft....
