901, G50 and PDK - all in one day

Sunday was one of those magical days in the northeast when we start to feel the warm sun reminding us that spring is around the corner.
I had several invites to go to a pre- C&C with a buddy looking to sell his wonderful 944, but the work around the yard (down branches from a recent storm) took priority.

My chain saw ran out of gas so I went to refill but realized I needed 2 cycle oil additive...so I took a break.

I decided to take the 1970 out of its winter rest. My 911T/S was put about an inch from my 2010 Turbo so I could fit an extra car in the three bay garage. I jacked up the rear by the engine case (hope in hindsight that its not a trick that damages things...I've seen it done many times before).

With the cars now separated and off their battery tenders, I cranked the 911 for the first time. A few pumps of gas and she caught and came to life. Yeah! Hardly even a puff of smoke. A minute of holding the revs and she felt ready. A few minutes into a slow gentle start the oil came up to temp and I let her rev to 4K...got into 4th and drove down one of my favorite roads in 4th hugging through the turns and down the straights at "A reasonable speed for the conditions (MattM suggested I edit) mph...I always love taking a 40mph turn at 2x the limit. As i approached the next towns limits i grabbed the parkway for the trip back up...a 2 lane scenic parkway where the little car revved strong and pulled to a responsible speed for the situation (MattM suggested I edit). I stopped by the hardware store for the 2 cycle additive (glad I remembered). In the parking lot I got 2 comments and a thumbs up...and it was covered in a light storage dust.

When I got home I left it out as the storage task is a bit tedious and the chain saw was still calling my name. So I did some yard work for the next 2 hrs. As I finished the work I headed to back to the house. As my wife and I were putting the things away she asked if I was going to drive her 2010 Turbo.

So, with her prompting me, I said yeah, sure I should exercise it while separated from her storage mate. So with my wife guiding me away from the wall, I am headed down the driveway and slowly down the road to get her warm. I decide to head north on a single lane windy road. I forget all about the sport/sport plus button as I haven't driven her in months and was slowly warming her up. I'm doing 30 in PDK 7th and slowly get her up to 90mph without the car shifting gears. What a wild ride versus slowly rowing the 901 trans. 90 feels like nothing. In my 70, the car is alive, buzzing, noisy...heavy steering. The brakes need forethought and calf strength. In the 997 Turbo, the ceramics grab and stop without thought. Stupendous technology. Big huge wheels/tires/brakes...love this part of the car. THEN I remember the Sport Plus button and it begs me to pull a pass of two cars ahead (yes, over the double yellow) but with a ton of straight line and vision (plus the 530hp makes the task a bit of a joke versus - any other car on the road). Within seconds I am a "responsible speed" (MattM suggested I edit) and the car chimes (I set it as a reminder to just be aware if I ever got going to fast (MattM suggested I edit)). A few more miles and turns and I am home, having slowed down for the last two miles to let her cool and oil to slowly corse through all her veins. With the help of my wife, I back her into the garage.

Ten minutes later, the 1970 is parked and the garage is looking like the winter storage it has become.

Buzz, buzz buzz...goes my Text and my friend who is selling a 1973 911T with 46K miles tells me I can stop by...so off I go in my 1991 C4.

Somewhere between the 1970 911 and the 2010 Turbo is this car - actually it is right in the middle oddly enough 1970 +20yrs + 1991 + 20 yrs + 2010.

This car is a daily driver, recently purchased from Indiana. RS Seats, Bilstein suspension, Cup 1s, Chip and Cat Delete. The car is strong and our winter Porsche. The perfect car for my wife and daughter and my weekend errands. The car is just perfect, like the 1970 it is NOT blazingly fast, but loves the 60-80mph range (although 80 is above the speed limit and I am editing myself as MattM tells me I may get in an accident, sued and end up in jail - read the full blog below). Both of the older cars have tricked out suspensions - lowered and stiffer and that makes them awesome drivers. They both have a lot of noise (the 911 much more than the 964 even with its Fabspeed system). The 964 is well behaved, fast out of the corners, balanced, sure footed and inspiring. Again, much more like the 1970 as it has little to no low end torque, but at 4K - 6K they are both in their element.

I arrive at my buddies to see the 1973 911 for Sale. Long story short, it is a no sale for me...but crazy car (the best under carriage I have ever seen, super engine, no leaks and everything is just right...but something about the roof isn't right, and there is no history to explain it). No need for another as I have a project or 2 already up my sleeve.

I am going to finish up my post about driving three great 911's as I remember I forgot to plug the Tender into the 70!

I have edited this to appease MattM who does not suggest anyone exceed the speed limit or cross the yellow or drive "Douchey" - Thanks MATTM

What's this got to do with the value of these cars?

I am sorry my 1st post - (in an attempt to join the conversation) - was annoying to Matt Monson. Sorry Matt, I didn't realize I was posting in the wrong area.

MODERATOR - please remove my post as MATT MONSON is offended.

I'm not offended and there's really no reason to get butt hurt. Sounds like a great day but it doesn't really have anything to do with Marketplace Discussion. Sorry if pointing out you put your thread in the wrong place hurt your feelings.

The moderators don't come around much. You'll have to delete your thread or just copy and paste it into Off Topic if you want it somewhere else. Or just keep posting here. I'm not going to hassle you. You've made it clear my input isn't desired.

Ok - OFF Topic - thanks for the suggestion.

But maybe I can edit my post to include what do you think my cars are worth so it can stay in this section and spark conversation.
1970 T
1991 C4
2010 Turbo

And I can add more - I wonder if the market is still going up...as I would like to add more cars to my collection. I dont have a 84-88 Car, or 991 (but based on my comments I prefer older ones), nor do I have a 74-83.

I'll play along and peer into MATT's crystal ball topics about the marketplace...

So - I have the above mentioned 3 Porsches and I am wondering from MATT and his friends what you think the future holds. Do you think I could find a great driver (a B+ car) in the mid 20's?
I am thinking of a
74-78 (as I do have a 79 euro car)
84-89

What is fair market value for one of each of these....and hey, while your at it, does anyone know where one is that hasnt been listed for sale (so I can get the early jump on the seller).

No offense Matt, your 'monitoring of the Marketplace' section is helping to keep the focus on "What's It Worth" and "if so and so asking too much" and "is the market due for a correction or is the value going to keep climbing".

Sounds like fun!
And yes, there are long hoods for sale out there.
I know of 3, but I can't come to terms on one, can't close on another (sellers fault) and am standing by on the 3rd.

901toPDK, sounds like we're neighbors, if the pre-C&C was the one in new canaan and the parkway is the merritt...

The one I was referring to wasn't New Canaan. But I have heard that gets good in the warm weather. I was hustling another parkway in another state with tighter turns, elevation changes, off cambers and more. Did I ever tell you the story about racing another 997 T many many many years ago on a warm Sunday am (say 8am)...empty road and we were screaming down the parkway DOING A REASONABLE SPEED FOR THE CONDITIONS AND SURROUNDINGS (MattM suggested I edit my actual speed from the post). Lots of fun until my follower got lose on a uphill off camber and spun into the grass run off (thankfully not the concrete barrier). I caught this all in my rearview as a continued down the road...I am a bit of a jerk as I did not go back (I was sort of scared to be implicated although I was not the cause of his spin). I regretted that. I am the first guy to help when possible. I know this place is filled with Haters (MM to name but one), so I hope this isnt a knock on my character.
Anyway -
The Merritt is a great road, albeit, it has been straightened and widened since I was a kid. Back then, it was a marvelous challenge.

I assumed you were from Brooklyn, I guess not.

Ronnie (I am not telling you something you dont already know) but most long hoods are really slow off the line, but great at 4k RPMs in 3rd and 4th gears. Today, all cars are fast in a straight...its when twisties, braking, apexing, and driver skill come in to play that the car comes alive and is fun sun fun.
My 993TT has 505 hp...its a sub 58 second car at LRP for DE's. I recently had the pleasure of driving a NA 993 with a seriously set-up suspension and it was equally fun. It was great as it was able to carry more speed through the turns and hang the rear a tad. Yes, 4wd heavy vs 2wd and lighter. Both were excellent...one was blazing fast and the other a perfect balance of engine to suspension.
