Deals are still out there - confess !

I picked up a sweet 79 SC coupe, mild hot rod a few weeks ago for 13k us$. I bought it from a friend of a friend that I have never met. It runs awesome. No damage or leaks.

Deals are still out there but I have probably asked 100 strangers and I got one ! Just saying.

That's where you were headed on the '83...which we took asking for and it was flipped for 38k a month later.

Suckers need apply for deals like that.

A few weeks ago, a Orange SC Coupe was listed locally for Mid teens, I think(paint weak, not rusted or crashed, solid mechanicals with records, no MM engine) , told a local guy who keeps whining that he wants a 911, but they cost so much, and he isn't sure that he will like one. Well, he only wants a G50 car, low miles, coupe, but doesn't want to pay for one
I tried to tell him, buy this clean it up, don't restore it, maintain it & make sure you will enjoy a 911, if nothing else, he could drive it for a year and sell it for a few bucks more to go towards a G50 coupe, also pointed out that I got not much less than the price of this for the last SC roller I let go. By that time, I talked myself into, but it was already sold.

Yeah, I know of a guy who bought a $175K car for $13K because he kept a poker face when he was offered the car from an uninformed seller. Sometimes the deals are too good. Where's the cutoff? I think at anything more than 25% under market, I'd feel obligated to share info.

Totally. 170k car for 13k is a majestically douchy move. I couldn't look at myself in the mirror if I did that. 25% cutoff sounds about right.

Yeah. I've been put in that position a few times in the recent past. And truth be told part of what colors me perspective is that I've been the guy getting the deal and now, years later, I feel a little dirty being party to it.

I've posted before about the 70T targa that I sold to Europe for $10k that I paid $1k for. I only owned and drove the car for less than a year before I sold it to help fund my business. But when I bought it, I knew it was a $6k car. I snatched that car. I didn't flip it, but I sure as hell stole it. Nowadays I wouldn't handle it the same way.

Was offered a 77 very original 46K mile 930. He was looking for selling in the $50K to $60K range a few years ago. I felt for him and offered to sell it on a 6% consignment instead. So he of course starts to check it out, calls around including PCNA and avoids any future conversation even when buyers lined up after telling me he wants to sell, clients were interested @ $100K market value at that time.. Just heard he wants $250K now a few years later. So as you can see, not always workable to give an even break. On the other side I have made many good buys being up front. Tough call on buyer or seller beware.

Wtf a 1970 for $1k?

Even $6k, I'd buy ten of them in different colors. How many years ago was that?

Funny, a guy I know got a Conda Green 70 T coupe for $1K in 2007. Wasn't running, but 45 minutes of fiddling and it was running/driving. Sold it for $10K about 10 days later.

I don't really think getting a wicked buy is douchy at all. It's called capitalism. I buy RV's for my dealership and my job is pay wholesale or less. I need some "steals" to make up for the times I get stuck and overpay.
Somehow when I overpay I never get my money back , so I sure don't feel bad when I underpay.
I buy Porsches for fun, but I have to fail about 100 times to get 1 deal on an old 911. In fact, when the guy sold me the 79 SC for 13k, I was so happy I sold him my 83 Shovelhead Harley for 3k. That was just a gift, but I think it made us even.

Like TW's mate, that was 2007. Dealership told the guy it needed $2500 of fuel system work. They never pulled the tray by the pump during their "diagnostic" I towed the car home, plugged in the pump and started driving it.

Went to Holland for a couple year long bare metal restoration. I'll find a picture when I am on a computer. Sold to Berlin for 55k Euro once it was done.

I agree that stealing stuff from uninformed people is a low way to act. Worse people in the world are the ones who look over the obituary columns then show up at widows houses and low ball while they are grieving. Realtors are the worst but it happens a lot especially in the art and antique business but a good car few dealers are now doing the same.

Interestingly in France there is a law that if you buy a house and flip it within 5 years you must pay 50% of the profits to the old owners. I kind of like it.

It's not. There can be ethics in capitalism. Capitalism doesn't necessarily mean "I'll fuxk anyone as hard as I can if only I get the chance". You gotta draw the line somewhere.

For example, say an old widow tells you she'll give you her late husband's old piece of junk for free if you just come take the damn thing out of her garage, and you go see it and turns out it's a 73rs. If you took it for free, you wouldn't be a capitalist, you'd be a very bad person.

No really, it is capitalism.
Buy low. Sell high
-As I said before, when I overpay , no one offers to pay me back !!!!
- bargains are rare, when you get the opportunity - TAKE IT !
