If you had $35-40K to spend on a Porsche...

...where would you put it?

• Find the best SC/Carrera you can find in that price bracket?
• Pray you could find a 964 Coupe with a manual?
• Look at a 996?
• Other?

Looking for a Porsche that, quite frankly, I could hang on to, enjoy, and not lose money on. I have already have a DD Cayman, so this would be weekend/special occasion kind of Porsche.

Let me have it!

...that's what I did. No regrets.

I would recommend a original 3.2 Carrera coupe for a classic air-cooled experience. Should be able to find a clean 84-86 driver in the mid to upper $30s. SC's are great also and go for a little less.

Good 964 C2 Coupes (5spd) are fetching $50k plus. Anything in the $30k range will need allot of work or the seller is really uninformed.

The 996TT are great cars. Complete different animal than the air-cooled cars. Should be able to find a clean 6spd coupe driver for around $40k.

Do your research and drive a bunch of vehicles. Targas and Convertibles are less expensive than coupes and are great fun also. Stay away from heavily modded cars and make sure to do a through PPI at a reputable shop before you purchase any older Porsche. Don't get hung up on mileage too much. Maintenance history is very important.

996 turbo would also be my vote- that's one hell of a car for the money.

I would buy a 1984-86 Carrera 3.2 in excellent condition and keep it stock. You already have a modern with the Cayman so go air cooled.

This is what I would do as well. No problems finding a car. Awesome car for the money. In 1986 a ton of 911s entered this country. They are out there and I'd wait for a clean one until I parted with the money, but they are out there.

But then again, a 996 TT is a supercar and some had a sticker price north of $180K. There you go.

Where do we feel the 996TT is on the value curve?

Another plus for Carrera vs SC is the ease of adding significant HP. My engine dynoed at 240 HP, with only these relatively cheap and reversible mods:
  • Steve Wong chip.

  • M&K pre-muffler and 1-in/1-out muffler.

You can't chip the SC engine since it's CIS injection, so stock you're stuck at 180 HP (correct me if I'm wrong).

Although for some (me) not being able to chip the engine is a plus... As is unassisted steering and braking, power nothing, etc.

That's what I thought, too.

Matt--you still have your '74?

You have to ask yourself what experience you really want. An old skool feel with torsion bars and all? A car with 911 heritage but all modern creature comforts? Somewhere in between?

Watercooled junk they made thousands of vs aircooled junk they made thousands of. My vote is with aircooled. I think those 996tt's will get down to reg 996 prices in 10 or fewer years. Let's face it nobody on here with an aircooled car will ever be clamoring for aging modern technology like they do aging analog tech (aircooled).
