2004 911 on Bring A Trailer

Ok, can someone explain how this car needing engine work is already at $14 when low mile perfect cars can be had for low 20's.

The whole Jake Raby? things just seams odd with all the cheerleaders chiming in on how great he is. How is he coming of as a super hero with building an engine that failed with not that many miles after the rebuild. they keep mentioning how many years has gone by but what does that matter.. The best part he goes on and on about himself and how busy he is but is on there writing paragraphs. He then explains how how it doesn't need a rebuild it needs engine work??

The whole thing just is odd. Why would the seller have mentioned his name and left it open like that??

When you Google his name you see that customers have had issues with his arrogance and he even posted a picture of himself laughing at a customer that had issues.

Sorry, I just can't stand these made up forum superhero's that never seam to live up to their hype.

$14k for a car needing $10k in engine work??

I can't say I follow the 996 market, but I think I recall a few in the high 20s on Bat and at least on in the 30s.

Well, $10-12K in engine work plus downtime and transport to/from, and the 'while we're in there' stuff. Pretty unusual for a custom built engine to have dramatic problems like this with so few miles since rebuild.

Seems to me there are several prominent custom Porsche engine builders out there and most have massive egos. When builds go bad, the better shops step up and own it. But I can see a lot of deflection in Raby's posts on BaT that jive with what I've heard about the shop. My sense is that if I were a bidder, I wouldn't give Raby a second bite of the apple.

Don't forget we are talking about the M96.

"The seller reports the car is drivable, but notes high oil consumption and a cylinder misfire that began several weeks ago. "

Sounds like the seller got some bad news and decided to dump the car online.

The internet has become a breeding ground for very smart marketing people. Jake goes on and on about how busy he is and how is three phone lines are busy all day but he has the time to comment relentlessly on this single for sale post?? Cant find time to dyne his own car but on BAT all day.

Makes you wonder if he can put this much time into pushing himself what he did to start the IMS bearing scare that he just happens to sell the replacement for. The internet is a very powerful sales tool. People sometimes don't realize how powerful theses forums are not seeing just because 25 post there are 3000 people reading the thread.

I honestly think this is just another great marketing strategy as now here is the guy who rebuilt an engine that failed looking like some sort of superhero. He is smart to use technical terms that go over the head of the causal observer. How is he not being held accountable for a probably $15k engine build that has failed so early? If I paid that much and the engine failed under 100k miles I would be pissed no matter how many years went buy. Years don't cause engine wear use does.

These cars do not trade for that much money let alone with a blown motor. How come on a site where people are bashed for days about lung nuts there is not ONE bad post about Jake in that for sale post? Try an see how BAT makes sure that doesn't happen on their auctions but is fair game on regular for sale posts.

I don't get the impression that Jake is a Motormeister. He seems to care at least in taking the time to comment. Before this auction I don't think he ever commented on BaT - but that's understandable because it's one of his motors on the line.

With that said, 7 years is a awhile, and he did bring this one back from the dead. People learn a lot in 7 years - and 7 years makes all the difference in gaining knowledge from going from semi-pro to pro.

I'm sure if he did this motor today it would be different from the motor he did in 2010.

I agree with you on value though. It's got a bad engine. Raby engine or not, it's bad and on it's way to being shot again. It would not add an ounce of value to that engine as it's pretty much a core - again - and that's how it started out when Raby got to it.

I did appreciate some of his comments, but honestly do not understand his 'alternative facts' or logic on what a rebuild is.

He said it needs tearing all the way down but in his mind it's not a rebuild. If that isn't a rebuild I don't know what is, as it still is taking a motor down and surely costs as much as any rebuild (and he would bill the same I suspect). That's where I differ with him. I don't know why he doesn't come out and say 'S**t happens. I built it, it doesn't run well, and maybe I can rebuild it again.'

$19,750 + $10,000 for rebuild...... $29,750. for a 101,000 mile car.

Two other cars available for over $36,000 with less than 50,000 miles.....

Who knows.......

At least Jake told them the reality...maybe $12k he said.

The numbers don't make sense on a 996 project. Sorry, but the buyer in this case did not make out, unless it's some small part he's betting on.

There's a small subset of 996 guys who think the 40th anniversary cars are "special" and will pay more for them. A few years back a friend paid what I would consider $12k too much for one, but he thought the 40th status was worth the extra $$$ over a regular 996. It's the only way I can explain that selling price.

The 2002 and up 996 usually get a premium because of the 3.6 motor, nicer interior, and overall improvement.

They are much better cars than their earlier 996 predecessors.

Also the headlight change - making them look less like Boxsters from the front.

Nothing really special about a 40th. A 101k example with a blown motor on its resume will never be a collectors car. For the same price with a rebuild you can buy a 4S with way less mileage. I don't get it either.

Well, there is no status - STILL - in owning a 25 Years Of Porsche Silver Anniversary 1975 911 S - no one cares (trust me, me included) - so I doubt anyone really cares (except the buyer) on a 2004 40-year Anniversary 911. I just like the color which is Silver. And mine isn't even silver right now - it's cheesy '80s red.

The paint and dash plaque really never added to the value of my car, it probably took away because no one really likes the tweed interior.

To me I would rather have a sound running car as the Anniversary on anything is just bling that means nothing and has no function (kind of anti-Porsche in a way).

It's funny how the engine rebuilder guy takes the time to almost become the seller on those IMS related BAT auctions

Anniversary models are good for one thing: Higher MSRP for Porsche.
