Driver 76 930 on ebay, Good deal ?

Anyone know more about this car? Probably not a good flipper prospect or investment with all the VIN & numbers removed. Rare color along with nice performance upgrades. Doubt anyone could put anything close together for the price. Seems to be a real 76 930 that looks and drives better than many that cost much more.

I live in Indiana and they don't typically issues VIN unless..

That car had been stolen.

What you have to worry about is if there is anyway the perious owner can track the car down.

I imagine the engines trans are traceable.

I'm sorry but to me that car was took to a professional chop shop back in the 80s. That's why all the VIN numbers are gone. Those guys were pros and knew what they were doing.

I considered buying this car and decided that if you are looking for a car to drive and enjoy this is a good deal. If you ever anticipate selling it you will be in the same boat as this seller. Do not count on any numbers anywhere on this car as I already discussed that at length with the seller. With that said I highly doubt anyone would ever be able to legally prove that this is their car. The seller mentioned that the DMV knew of the original VIN number but would not disclose that to him or the previous owner which leads me to think that they would have been able to determine whether it was currently a stolen vehicle or not. Im thinking more of a theft recovery that the insurance company then sold at auction after cashing out their insured

I Live near Indianapolis also.
The eBay posting is in error. The suspension was done by Bob Farmer, not Ed.
Bob has been in this area his entire life. He is dealer trained and worked (works) in his independent shop. One call to him and you may get an answer why this car is titled as it is.

I checked that one out as well, the id plate on the chassis has been cut out completely, all the id numbers ground off the engine and trans, no id left. Anyone missing a 76 930?

It's a very tempting car, basically a half price car. You just have to enjoy it and now when you go to sell it that the same deal you got you have to give the next guy. Just like a salvage title car. Guys tend to buy them and over time think they are the smartest guy in the world, and reality hits when they go to sell it. Sure enough the 30% you got off when you buy is the same 30% you have to give the next guy.
If anyone goes to see this car I would be interested to hear about it.

I would say 1/4-1/3 of its normal value as it's a '76

Theft recovery with a washed title?
Law enforcement can extract the engine and tranny numbers. Still will never look original but could also prove originality. Secondary ID numbers can also prove identity of the vehicle. Highly doubtful those were removed.
I would think if a state issues a title they would know the story and that the theft is resolved.
If you unfortunate enough to live in a state like Washington state that forces out of state vehicles to be inspected by the state patrol, this car wouldnt be worth it. The cops have the authority to not issue a title for a couple years if they don't like what they see.

What are secondary ID numbers? How can you extract engine and trans numbers if they are completely defaced? FYI - I am the seller and would be most grateful if anyone here can shed some light on how to get a factory identification on this vehicle.

And it is Bob Farmer. My bad. I talked to Bob last year and he did not remember the car specifically and offered the same theories as to the VIN assignment but no definitive answer.

You can't do anything about engine and trans numbers. All you can do is try and find the "hidden vin" somewhere on the car. 930 people will know where these are, I don't. Many of the parts will have the last few numbers of the vin stamped on them. From this, you can probably piece together enough info to get a COA from Porsche and confirm the vin.

As to the motor and trans it will ALWAYS be a guess if they are original to the car.

Not sure if it applies to 930s but early 911s have the partial vin written in marker paint on top of the dash metal, under the dash pad.

There will be a production number stamped in dash under knee pads, I don't think this changes anything. If VIN numbers are all gone and car had a title with a new VIN that is what you have. It would be easy to determine if this a real 930 chassis - sure looks like it to me.

Just thinking. If the wrong someone had legal ownership from a previously destroyed 76 930, the title, the ID area stuff and engine, trans #s to restamp, especially if it was the same color? Even if not the same color, lots of color and parts changed, now restored 930s out there. Hope it gets sold to a driver enthusiast who could care less about numbers etc. Most likely it is much faster, and better handling than a stock early 930. Good looking too.

The number stamped under the passenger knee pad looks to be metal filled then ground down to obscure any number. Have not taken the dash pad off.

Sounds like Charlie Sheen may have gotten his hands on it back in the day, if you haven't seen the movie, it's worth watching.

- Bottom of seats have date stamps, though not sure what date that refers to, seat upholstered, seats installed in car, car completed, buffalo that gave its skin to seat leather died, or someones birthday
- Doors, door cards, have hand written numbers believe same as underneath dash
