One needs to go but which one... 993 4s or 930?
Gents
Having thought a lot about it recently, I realized (like probably a lot of you) that I did not drive these beauties as often as I would like to (weather-permitting, time permitting, wife-permitting, etc) and that the majority of my time I spent in the car is in a dull daily car.. With the kids being still small enough to be in the back of a 911, I am contemplating to buy a 991 (first gen) but for that, one of my two other cars need to go (which I know for a fact I will regret).... The multi-million dollar question therefore is: who needs to leave, the 993 4s or the 930? I know this is a choice I will have to do myself at the end but every day I am changing my mind hence interested what you guys would do if you would be in my position Thanks a lot |

Tough choice. I would keep the 930 but I think others might differ.

Keep the 930.
A new 991 will DD far better, and the 993 will feel gutless when you drive it after being in a new one. The 930 is older and rawer so it won't suffer as much in the comparison. Of course if you want a heretical suggestion get a gen 1 PTT as a daily instead. Pricing on those puppies has dropped like a rock, you get AWD and there's room for 4. Sell your current daily driver and get a 3-5 year old Panamera. And keep both AC cars.

I have a loaded 2012 (991) Carrera S and it is a hoot to drive. Can you say 0 to 60 in 3.4 seconds? I love my 944 track cars and I hope my 914 that I am restoring will hold up to my expectations. I miss my 1975 Carrera, also. However, if you need to have only one Porsche, I vote for the 991.

Then we need pictures and more details. If I was making this decision year, color, body style etc all come into play.

If you're going to consolidate into something you'll drive somewhat daily, keep the 993. If you're gonna buy a modern replacement to drive once one is sold, keep the 930.
In the end, the premise of the question seems flawed to me...It will cost you less to put miles on the 993 than it will to own a 991 (insurance costs, wicked depreciation, probably maintenance). Keep them both and drive the 993 daily unless there's salt on the ground. |

Sell the 993.
Really, when I see a 993 on the roads I say to myself, "That's a neat car. Nice to see someone that drives one. They sure looked good up until the end." When I see a 930 I say, "Wow, now that's a true gentleman's car. A man's car. A brute's car. It's amazing that they even made them for the street. It's a real treat to see such a piece of automotive art. Listen to that sound. Look at those flares." Not even a comparo. Sell the 993. |

Just cause you don't use them doesn't mean you have to sell either one. I don't use our wedding china everyday.. but its nice to have and use once in a while. I imagine your wife has some nice jewelry she doesn't wear everyday but wouldn't want to give them up either. Same with either a 993 or a 930. And they are so different to begin with. Not sure how you have them stored, but if covered, start by removing the cover. It will force you to see it when you leave the house.. then.. on a weekend, pledge to just use one. Kids of all sizes love riding in 911s. Take one kid. Take both. Take neither. A couple of years ago I had a smaller scale problem.. I never used my 944.. Then, I just started using it. Took my kids to their practices.. took it to work now and then.. took it on errands.. suddenly I remembered why I liked it so much.
Don't sell.. Don't consolidate. Driving a Panamera/Cayenne/991 will NEVER be as special as driving the 993 or 930. Never. ever.

No 991. Just make yourself pull either the 993 or 930 out and start using it. Just do it. No modern Panamera/Cayenne/991 has the visceral joy of the early cars. Who cares that you don't use it every day. Use it on your terms.

Thanks for the feedback. I told you it was not an easy choice :-)
To answer a couple of questions: 1. My 993 cost me about 2800 € a year (I am located in Europe) just in terms of insurance and taxes...Whilst I do love the car very much, not sure I will love to drive her in heavy traffic/vad weather, etc... A 991 will cost me less (go figure out) and will be usable every (rainy) day.. 2. My wife is accepted as secondary driver on the company car and since she does not drive that much, it should not be an issue from a company car policy- point of view. 3. My mind is currently set on buying a second-hand 991 and keeping the 930 (by doing so I have two cars at both side of the spectrum 3. |
