I love the speculative spending approach.I do not see a big deal here.Good potential. So the car is gold.Nice color when done well.Looks like a great start for someone.Ciao Fred

How many remain today?
Production numbers don't mean much for a single year. Whats so special in the spec of a 78 that it matters more?

Oh man, now you've done it; here comes the torrent of auto-mag based BS about the superiority of the 78-79 model years - BS that has no basis in facts, whatsoever, and is actually flat wrong.

Floating rotors (78/79)
Proper 930 vin
Early boost delivery (wild)
Raw handling

Just to name a few.

There is a whole thread solely devoted to the the early 3.3 930 over on ferrari chat for anyone who wants to educate themselves on the importance of the early 3.3 930s and their role in helping the evolution of later 930s.

Turbo cars built

When you add up all the numbers from 75-89 for production theyback are not so rare. They made a lot of cars and most people were afraid to drive them.Once they melted a motor from overboost they drove them even less for fear of paying for another. When you have a number of cars in your cave a gold one looks good between guards red & black unless you are pure like the driven snow & drive a white one like Rawknees.Ciao from C.r. with a few P-Cars on the road.

I'm almost as pure as you, FaaptabulousFred!

MountainManMatt - there is no difference in boost delivery from 77-89; all used the exact same turbocharger (a horrible unit), ignition, and fuel systems . . . talking US delivered cars - minor differeces in fuel and ignition for Euro models, butt they don't amount to much (and the US/Lamdba fuel head of the US models is a much improved unit that can be more easily modified than the Euro cast iron head).

The exhaust system on the 78-79 US 930s is terrible (Deez will confirm) - much improved in later year models.

The later years also have a 930 vin, but due to changes in VIN regulations, the 930 (which became "93X") is located in about the middle of the number chain.

There were no changes to the suspension systems throughout the model run (not talking about the 76, with tiny wheels and smaller anti-roll bars) - don't know what is meant by "raw handling" of the early models.

In a world of BILLIONS and BILLIONS and BILLIONS of people also coupled with a truly WORLD MARKET.

What is most likely 14,000 to 15,000 930s left does not go very far does it?

They made nearly 150,000 NA s’s sc’s and carrera’s in that time frame.

Porsche is now building over 300,000 cars a year... back in the 70s the number was closer to 40,000 cars a year.

Let me also say that interest in the far east is really picking up for classic air cooled porsches.

You are so wrong here..

There is a HUGE difference in the early 930s to the later 1985 and up cars..

COUNTLESS

Parts simply DO NOT BOLT UP

Totally different driving characteristics!!

Totally different boost delivery.

A driver level 930 could be had for a DIY and 25-30K with this car, but a driver level 930 is only worth about 60-80K. so paying more than 40k for this car does not make sense when you can buy one done and enjoy it immediately. Good example https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1982-porsche-930-turbo-2/
As for turning this 930 into a 170K car, nope. Not a smart move. 170K cars do not have stories or are put together by DIY's , once again I would buy one done with original paint and no stories other than it is perfect, before buying a project car for much more than 40K then handing it and your wallet over to someone and hoping for the best does not sound like fun.
There has been threads about that experience.

For those wanting to know the difference between driving a early RAW 3.3 vs the later refined 3.3s of the mid 1980s I have prepared a PDF that features a article from Car & Driver 1986 that speaks exactly to the absents of the Rawness of the later cars.

Not saying one is better than the other. But they are two VERY DIFFERENT driving experiences.

7 1/2 days to go, I'm thinking it will go higher. Most likely over $40k + some, keep an eye on it and see.

That to me is a absolute Track Dog.
Clean driver 930s sell well above 930s in track car condition.

It was a lawyers question. I akready knew the answer, but wanted to hear the witness' justification.

I just read the article; it is creative, dreamy-land, fan-boy stuff that is not based on facts or mechanical experience, and the writer obviously knew very little about the Turbo line in general.

Does the 78/79 drive more like a non intercooler turbo than mid 80s car?
