Doesn't look like a basket case at all. Just partially disassembled for paint. I wonder what the reserve is? Should go in the 70s at the least. Paint for 25k and you have a 170k 930.

Definitely not a basket case. That car is $20k from being an excellent driver.

Interesting 930 basket case
Quote:
I’m thinking closer to $50,000.. This 930 is needing at least 150 hours of work. 150 x $200 a hour is $30,000 in labor alone. At least $5000 in misc parts here.. GUARANTEED Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Your numbers are always biased by the idea that we are taking a car up to a 1 or 2. An excellent DRIVER is a condition 3 car.

I must admit I agree with you. Unless you're doing the work yourself it will easily past $50k....motor alone will be $15-25k, suspension will be another $5-7k, tires, whees(refurbishment) and brakes (refurbished calipers) $3-4K, transmission rebuilt..if needed..$4k, interior cleanup-refurbishment $3-4K, paint $10-15k, misc-$5k of course your demographics will play a role in all this. I hate to say it but many shops ideology is that the value of the car plays a role in the cost of the repairs, which I think is wrong but I don't own a shop.

Operative statement above is "Unless you're doing the work yourself". For a solid DIYer the number should be far less than "easily past $50K". This is why many of us DIY... $15-$25K to refresh an engine with only fifty-some-thousand miles? Unless the long time owner absolutely abused and neglected this car the bottom end is probably pristine and in need of pretty much nothing, and if the seller is to be believed, the jugs and pistons have less than 30K miles on them so they're probably in fine shape as well. Pull the engine, re-seal as necessary and it'll very likely be good to go. Unless you run into something unexpected, you'll be in the refresh many, many thousands less than your estimate above. The same is true for your suspension estimate and probably for your interior number as well. Wheels could certainly get up there, depending on your taste. Your gearbox number is in the ballpark, though you were wise to insert your "if needed" qualifier, as I'd wager it's fine - again, given the reported mileage. Interestingly, your body and paint estimate actually seems to be a bit on the low side. Now, I'm not suggesting you can't get a quality job for $10-$15K (irrespective of what you might have read in the JE thread) but given that you aimed so high on the other items I'd have expected you to throw out a number in the $30-$40K range. I think a DIY buyer who just wants a beautiful 930 he can drive and enjoy could come pretty close to Matt's $20K estimate - the most likely wild card being the cost of body and paint.

Cool project car for an experienced Porsche owner and hobbyist. Good paint and reassembly and you're driving.
The head studs are done. The interior would clean up just fine. Black is the easiest to rejuvenate and look good. The suspension could be freshened up with new rubber and shocks at a later date. Transmission. Well probably needs freshening, but you can drive it for quite a while with worn syncros. Trust me. You just need to learn to shift better. I wonder what the reserve is? I would not pay over $50k. Like Matt said, $20k and I'd have a clean driver with new paint. Too bad it's Gold.

Everyone is making speculations and determinations on different levels of restoration and reconditioning. This as we know is very slippery slope. Assuming the car runs, very little needs to be done for it to become a “driver,” what ever the hell that means. Who ever buys the car better know what they’re getting themselves into, even low mileage, unmolested cars have issues and need maintenance and money. In its current conditions I would either “restore” it completely or just reassemble and drive it. Piece milling projects can be the biggest waste of a money. Labor hours vary greatly depending on the shop and the quality of work. If you’re looking for a ‘deal’ then don’t bother restoring/reconditioning the car.

Hard to put a value over $50k on that car. It has obviously been sitting and it will take $$$ to get it sorted mechanically plus all the cosmetic work needed to turn it to a nice driver.

I remember contacting a member here who has a restoration paint shop. I asked what a windows out bare metal repaint would cost. He quoted me $35K plus gaskets for the glass. His work looks top notch. I don't (like most of the guys here) have a Godfather in the business, so my cost is all retail. Shops charge about $130 hr plus any additional cost (i.e coffee breaks, bathroom breaks, chit chatting, Arse scratching..etc..etc)...so yea it would be best getting into a car like the OP listed with an open mind...and wallet.

Restoration guys call it a basketcase. Driver guys call it a project. $75k restores this car. $20k gets it on it's feet. It's just a matter of having a different end goal. I see a run of the mill late 70's 930. It's not a collectible to me, even if a restored or preserved one is a six figure car.

You'll need $10k to make the engine perform Mountain Man.
Headers $ 2,500.00 WG $600.00 Turbo and Misc $3,000.00 Intercooler $ 2,000.00 Injectors, Fittings, Ect. $1,300.00 Laask WUR $500.00 But you should be 380-400HP to the wheels ![]() Nothing. It's just not for me. But then again I have a Guards Red Porsche, So my input is worthless ![]()

Of course, if there's a stupidly high reserve on it then all bets are off. _
