A new sales strategy?

I've seen this a couple of times now. Raising the price back up when something doesn't sell. Is this an actual strategy?

Generally when you see a place that has rows and rows of shiny cars, many of which are over-priced and not selling, you can bank on the fact that they own few of them. The cars are on consignment and merely act as bait, hoping someone will either come in and look at the car or someone will sell their car to the dealer, by noticing the one they originally had for sale. This is why the sky-high prices sometimes even go up, because they don't care if the car sells or not.
I would never want to try to do all these gymnastics to try and buy and sell cars, it's so simple, buy then sell, anything else is wasted energy.

Yep, what Adam wrote.

Here in SoCal the used car sales people posing as real estate people
(is there a difference?) do the same thing. A place down the road just got bumped up 200K as it wasn't selling at the original price. What the..............

I'm not a backyard flipper or a dealer but have done this before with success on the local Kijiji. If the car doesn't get any bites in the first while I take it off the market and relist it a few weeks later at a higher price. I have no idea why it has worked.

Oddly enough, I think some folks see a low offering price (or not top dollar pricing) and suspect there's something wrong with the car. Elevate the price to what someone thinks it should be selling for and voila...:-)

I think I may actually be in that weird wormhole now. Not having any luck selling my car for $32k asking price, thinking I may have to try that strategy next. Plenty of flippers throwing low-ball offers out though...:-)

I had a call this weekend from one of those companies that want you to fork over $$$ to let them advertise on your behalf. The guy tells me my car is way underpriced. Says he'd advertise it at $40k and I should easily be able to walk away with $35K...I think he's smoking dope in this market, and at this time of year.

We don't sell any cars between Thanksgiving and early Spring, March/April because you basically have to wholesale them to another flipper, because no real buyers are buying during the holidays. So if you aren't getting any action, it's just the time of year, not your car, or your price.

December is one of the biggest months for car sales. March is also top 3 or 4.

Car sales in general yes, maybe, but not classic Porsche projects. The only buyers in the dead of winter are other dealers, who buy wholesale. Expect a 20% hit if you sell during this period. Trust me on this one, it's real. Go though completed sales on ebay and you will see how few cars sell during this period.
