Help looking at buying this 911SC backdated to RS style
I'm looking at selling my 996Turbo and getting into the AirCooled market. As my budget isn't particularly high, I'm likely to have to stick with an SC. I don't know a whole lot about the differences between the years of each model, but I know the generic information about an SC that I've read online/reviews.
A mechanic friend put me in touch with the seller of 911SC, and is looking to sell off-market for ease. I haven't got a whole lot of information, nor photos, yet, but here's what I have so far:
This is currently the only photo I have: ![]() And here's the advertisement video of it, where it features, for some better angles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2-H0mb7ark Is there anything you can spot that I'd need to know about? Interior, exterior, etc. Anything that stands out as good/bad? Particular questions I need to ask the dealer? Roughly, how much would be fair (in USD)? I appreciate the markets are different between the UK/US, but any assistance would be ideal. |

You need to give us waaaaaaaaayyyyyy more information about this lovely car before we can even begin to give you a price.
It looks really nice, but I'd like to hear and see much more about it.

The owner looks like a guy who knows his stuff - wrist watches that is - not Porsches. The SC looks hmmmmm. Value, 20-30GBP all depending on condition.

Sure it is. That's 74-75 Carrera look. That's a thing now.

I think some of the vernacular is just lost/confused on someone that is new Porsche. As others have said, we'd need way more info to give you any real guidance, but assuming everything is as represented I'd think mid to low $30's.
With verification of original color, drive train health, actually no rust, solid mechanicals, etc, that number could move north pretty easily. As Monson noted, this isn't a "backdate" so much as an IROC/Carrera replica. Nothing wrong with that, but definitely not worth as much as all stock. most important....that Pasha interior is AWESOME! |

Pretty much the laziest 'backdate' you can do, change the front rear bumpers and decklid?
The mirrors aren't even changed, that's like 4 bolts! |

The mirrors are why I put 75 in my comment. haha
The big question I would have is how was the paint done? Bare metal? Sprayed over the original? Windows in or windows out? Fenders and doors off? etc. Otherwise it's a tired SC that probably needs engine and gearbox love in the next few years. And suspension and brakes could probably use attention. It's like my 74, but newer. I'll throw it out there at $25k, but on BaT my $25k sells for $32k.

Haha, I know right! It's all good, I realise it's going to be a steep learning curve (way steeper than the water cooled world!) so I'll absorb as much as I can.

I assume it's roughly a 74/75 to begin with? To all: Thanks for clarifying the backdate thing, that's my bad - I guess "RS modification" would be a better description, although as stated it isn't a particularly full one. I realised that an engine rebuild is about $10k usd, so if that hasn't been done I'll need to factor it in? How would I go to test how "far gone" the engine is, a simple compression test? Or should it be taken apart by a specialist? |

Jay, generally speaking, "backdate" in the 911 world means that it's been converted to a "longhood" (i.e., '73 and older) front end and non-impact rear end.
From there, it's open season, with flares, hot-rodded/carbureted engines, stripped out interiors, etc., etc. |

Engine rebuild it going to be more than that if you are paying for labor on it. Probably closer to $15k these days. Compression test is a good start, but SCs are known for breaking case studs. Part of a PPI on it should involve removing the valve covers and testing the studs. Even if the brakes and shocks are good, it will likely need a ton of bushings.
