At the time I was beguiled by the beauty of the recently acquired 308, which made the 993 seem boring. Now, 7 years later, I just sold the 308, and took a very good 911SC as partial trade.

I wouldn't trade the Ferrari experience I had, but I truly missed the Porsches. They are in my blood.

If you're the same way, buy a Ferrari, but hang on to the Porsche. You may want it back someday.

Hi guys ,

Not to derail the thread , I own an 88 Ferrari Mondial Cabriolet and an 89 Porsche 930 . I enjoy driving both of them , but there is something in the Ferrari that makes the drive special . The Porsche 930 however is way faster but its a more clinical experience . Im having thoughts of selling my 89 930 to get another F Car an 89 328GTB w/c is similar in price w/ my 930, but Im afraid that I might regret it . Would you swap a 930 for a 328GTB ? I cant sell the Mondial due to sentimental reasons ( handed down / given to me by my Dad , its been w/ the family since 2003 ).

Thanks in advance ,

Tdh888.

That’s the kind of stuff I need to hear. The reason I like the 993 is I have no problem driving it to work (like today, for example). It blends in with traffic, there’s plenty of them around (most people don’t know the difference between a 993, 996, 997, etc) and it doesn’t really draw attention. It’s pretty darn reliable, too. I’d love an old Ferrari but I have a feeling the experience would be the opposite.

I still want one...

I have to say this...the itch you feel is not going to go away until you scratch it, so you might as well scratch it now, and see how you feel a few years down the line. I went through this a few years ago and bought a manual gallardo. And, I really, really, really missed having a p-car in the garage, so I waited until I could swing both and did just that. Good luck! You can always go back...nice thing about used Italian exotics is that unless you damage it, put a ton of miles on it, bought too high, or a global economic calamity strikes, you will almost certainly get your money back when its time to sell (although you have to be a bit patient as a seller since the market is not huge). Good luck!

...also, I forgot to mention...you are right that the experience will be different than your current "blend in" experience. I found myself not driving my Gallardo for precisely that reason. After the initial novelty of the car wore off, I found I kind of had to find a reason to drive it, whereas with my 911's I never felt bad (or douche-y) about running errands, taking it to work from time to time, picking up kids, taking them to practices, etc... This sucked because the car ended up sitting more often than not, which seemed like a waste. My solution was not to sell it, but to save and wait and add a p-car back to the stable when I could, so I could still enjoy fun drives when the time didn't feel "right" to pull out the lambo (i.e., driving to work...I did that one time and it was a huge mistake as I work at a big company with lots of pay stratification, and it was not a wise move).

So, if you can only swing one "fun" car, you may be disappointed with an Italian, as I found that they are just not as "useable." Not because they can't be used, but because, for me at least, I just didn't use it like I could a p-car. .

Thanks everyone for the replies. I won't be making any rash decisions soon, and definately haven't 'made up my mind'. Just putting the thoughts out there. FWIW, I spent some time with the old '72 this afternoon. Damn that smell is good!

That's exactly what I did, sold my 3.2 to a friend so that I could pick up a 348tb.
Two different worlds; for daily drivability the 911 comes out on top, but the 348 is definitely the most underrated F car out there IMO. Do it! Just make sure your parking space is wide enough to swing open those wide vented doors lol

I have a 95 355 6 speed hardtop. I have owned numerous Porsches, in the past. Be prepared the 355 is entirely different beast, non stop attention and questions at stop lights. I replaced my manifolds with TUBIS and run cat deletes, with a Tubi muffler. It screams.

So far no major issues, I had the belt service done last year. Do I say it a better car than my old 997 TT, no, just different.

Thanks,

Larry

The Gallardo is really German and an Audi anyways - so don't feel too bad.

I am trying to add the 348 to my stable rather than trade the porsche for it which keeps my budget down. The argument to go 355 instead is valid however when an extra 15-20k isn't in the picture the 348 is still a great option. And lastly the visual design of the 348 is much more appealing for a similar priced 308/328. I dont think I would trade for it but thats me.

I have had 4 911s over the years. I sold one about 4 years ago and bought a 1992 348 TS. I currently have a 86 Carrera 3.2 as well. I believe that the Ferrari is more "high strung" and you will probably work on it more than a 911. I also believe that every time you drive it its an event and is way faster and better handling than people generally think. Mine is rock solid and removing the roof is easy and lets the great sound in.I love Porsche and have been to the museum twice and their family home in Austria. They design solid and fast vehicles that last but Ferrari's are so much fun to drive and have such mystique to them that I wouldnt think twice about trying one. They use Motronic and Bosch parts and really arent bad to work on if you are inclined to do so. I would buy one with as much paperwork for service as you can find and i wouldnt shy away from a TS as they are a lot of fun.And yes, I know I need to swap my wheels around since the fins are pointing the wrong way in the back. Just waiting until I need new tires. Good luck.
