Why so cheap?

Why are the earlier - 1977 2.7 liter 911’s so cheap?

Have a chance to get a repainted ‘rare’ blue 1977 with 30k miles on rebuild and no rust for about $25k

There is a yellow one that was also posted in seattle Craigslist yesterday for $25k

What makes these the least desirable?

MrBonus 05-18-2018 06:01 AM

They utilized thermal reactors for emission control which tended to cause the engines to run substantially hotter and warp the heads over time. The "mid-years" were considered the stepchild of the air-cooled 911s for years as a result.

kc911s 05-18-2018 06:05 AM

Here we go again...

mreid 05-18-2018 06:08 AM

The 2.7 with the stock exhaust removed and an appropriate aftermarket installed, Carrera tensioner, etc. is a reving monster. While light on HP, they are a blast to drive. Many still see them as underpowered impact bumpers, where the SCs and Carreras are better. I disagree as long as you are willing to make a few improvements.

juanbenae 05-18-2018 06:25 AM

most of the states that require emissions testing, CA & CO come to mind off the top of my head still require testing on the 76 & 77 models so they are less desirable for the items noted above.

Ahh okay I've heard people skim the subject but no concrete answers. Thank you!

I've got a chance to get a 1977 911S for $25k

Has 125k on body, and 30k on engine rebuild.

No rust and had bare metal repaint to original paint code 304 (caribe or manerva blue?)

Only issue is cracked dash and a window switch needs rewired.

Thinking about pulling the trigger. Let me know if any interest in pics.

mreid 05-18-2018 10:42 AM

You don’t know us very well. We are ALWAYS interested in pictures!

All smog strangled 75-77 2.7s needed their engines rebuild between 60-90k mi. They are good with the following updates:
-pulled head stud issue fixed.
-no thermal reactors
-add SSI
-add sport exhaust
-add pressure fed carrera chain tensioners
-pop off valve
-11 blade fan, not the 5 blade.

Everyone talks about originality is valuable in all air-cooled 911s. Not true with the 75-77. Nobody wants one with thermal reactors, stock exhaust and 5 blade fan. All my listed mechanical upgrades add to the value.

Post pics and contact info. I'm going to buy it while you're thinking.

Wow, I passed on a 77 911 Coupe in green with only 45,000 miles in excellent condition that had recent top-end rebuild for pulled head studs back in 2006.

Asking price was $14K and I thought it was too high at the time and picked up my 82 Targa a few months later for a little bit more.

Took the seller about 2 years to find a buyer.

mreid 05-18-2018 11:33 AM

Yeah, well I also sold a 1986 930 with 42k miles for $34k six years ago. I try not to think about it. At least I know it went to a great home!

2006 is a lifetime ago in this market. Even 76-77 cars rarely go below $25k these days.

If I were in the market, I would be kicking the tires on Ficke's 77 Targa in the classifieds. I think that's a nice car and the money on it is right, $32k.

Appreciate this man!!!

Asked the seller if any of this was done.

Now I feel even more pissed the local guy to me sold his 77 911S with a 3.0 in it and an added well-done SC wide body... Oh well.

If you guys wana get even more upset google some older 2008-20012 for sale ads LOL

Sold my 67 912 golf blue (all original body and interior, even radio) with an engine by Harry Pellow (The Maestro) for around $6k in 06. Sold my 95 993 coupe with 110k mi for $21k in 08. Bought a 912E for $6.7k in 2011. Back then, good SCs were $15k. 964s were under $20k.

I thought I'd be getting different flavors of air cooled 911s for $20k forever. Maybe even splurge for a $30k-$35k 930. Everything changed for the worse around 2012-13.

In '15, I bought my 93k mi 77 911S coupe for $25k.

ItzaMe 05-18-2018 02:01 PM

Stay focused guys. What about the same color 1976 912 with 125k original miles and original motor/trans?

They also have these issues? Have chance to get one at $20k

Let me know it’s the same color as the one above! Weird

rgofast 05-18-2018 03:03 PM

A few years ago no one wanted the mid year cars. They are all that is left that’s affordable. Not many left as a lot of them were junked out, because of the previous low valuation. As far as the engine goes, the main problem was the twisting cases, not warped heads. Yes the exhaust valve guides failed very quickly, but not the entire head. The thermal reactor cars ran very hot in order to pass smog. Most of these cases not only pulled studs, but the cases really deformed. Most likely would need to be line board, and have the spigots re surfaced, along with inserts and steel studs. If you build them right, and don’t over heat them, the 2.7 is a very nice engine, and much lighter than the aluminum alloy engines.

ItzaMe 05-18-2018 04:55 PM

Sheesh.. I have a long way to go with porsche knowledge

It's basically a 914 engine. Different beast.

kc911s 05-18-2018 05:57 PM

The blue 911 is nice. That wing will not look good in person on a narrow body though. Get the car and remove the wing.

Nick_Foster 05-19-2018 12:35 AM

Come on itza, 76 912 versus a 77 911 for 5k difference?
Check the 77 thoroughly and pull the trigger.

Not sure if you're really interested in a 912, but this one looks stunning, IMO. No affiliation. But for me the tinted windows would have to go on day 1.

Boy doesn't even have bullets in the gun. That 77 will sell before he can decide what color socks to wear.

Personally I’m in Keswick, UK on my way to Scotland, on a 3 week driving tour of the country. Haven’t seen one air cooled yet and only a few water cooled 911s and boxsters. Limited internet so ppmd keeps me entertained.

No, that wasn't me. It was a bot. I have it dialed in to this forum and it tries to put the kibosh on everything that seems suspect. And this again is suspect.

Methinks the lady doth protest too much.

That was 7:30am while my wife slept and I tended the kids. I’ve been busy since then. Got a new pen built and picked up some weiners. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1526764970.png

inaminit 05-19-2018 01:54 PM

Yes-Please leave that wing behind if you buy it. The middies look best when they don't have any of that later junk on them.

Hilarious. I thought everyone was done with this guy when everyone found out he was a flipper in disguise. Wasn't a protest - just observation. Oh well...I'll let you guys have this one.
