I had a similar scare/freak out when I found my chassis VIN was a "ZZZ" number AFTER I bought my 84 Carrera. The above explanations sound correct.

Key Won't Turn in Ignition

Had this problem with my 84 Carrera, tried jiggling, WD-40, in and out and flipping the key to no avail.
When I inserted a small, magnetized screwdriver, it worked immediately.
