new axle 'whine'
I put the new axle in today, new bolts, torqued them to 30lbs. drove it around carefully. and above about 40MPH i hear a very slight whine coming from the rear. its possible this has always been there but i was really listening carefully today.
is this normal? the axle is brand new, i still have my rebuilt one sitting wrapped up in case i need to swap again. I matched the greased and added a little grease to the ends of the CVs when i put them onto the wheel/tranny. it occurs when the car is above about 40, and i apply power, you can just barely make it out. windows/sunroof need to be shut, no talking ect... is that normal? should i give it a little time as a 'break in' before i take it out and put the old rebuilt one back in?

Hey there,
it may or may not be new. i don't see how CV axles could cause whine, unless they aren't installed properly. all 944 series transmissions are known to be a bit noisy, the trans. in my '84 has sounded like a school bus since i bought it 5 years ago, and 30k ago. it sounds like its alright, since you can barely make it out... now i have to ask, does the sound show up just when you're accelerating? does it get worse when you accelerate hard, when you're decelerating? when you're neutral on the power and in gear? the change in sound due to stresses in the gearbox can mean different things. on a side note, i'm a pilot as well... private ticket with instrument rating... working my way up there. i must say the ERJ 145 is probably the sexiest ride out there.... mmmm -Mike

Did you replace wheel bearings too? Sorry, I can't remember. Does it get louder when you corner? One way more than the other?

ahhhh Riddle!! i went to Florida Tech right down the road from you!
the EMB is a good airplane, but there are far more sexier ones out there!  sexy...to me is like a 73 or a 77  gotta get into a boeing to get the 911 if you know what i meanback to topic sorry. i did not change the wheel bearings. the whine is always the same, its very quite. in fact, my girlfriend insisted i was certifiably crazy cause she didnt hear anything. you only hear it while accelerating, if you accel hard, you cant hear it, if you accel slowly, you can barely hear it. when you decel, coast, idle, let off the gas, even maintain speed, or are in N you wont hear it. no difference when you corner either side. maybe im just being paranoid.

You may be suffering a little self-repairitis obsessicus. Could be that you're hearing the tranny now the bad CV's gone and a new one's in. Yes, these trannies are a little noisy. Mine's sounded like an F-18 for 10 years now. I just make sure the fluid's okay and turn up the radio. Did you remove your driveaxle flange? Could have lost some fluid if you did. Maybe change the fluid and see if things change. CVs tend to click or grind when they're going out (as you know), and when they heat up you can smell the hot grease. They don't tend to whine much.

Did you get the right length axle for your car? There are different lengths. The early is shorter than the later and the automatics are different lengths side to side. If the axle is too long it could be putting pressure on the ring and pinion.

how differant are the lenghts? I put the old one up to the new one, they were very close, i attributed any differance to the CV boots pushing the CVs a little bit. Are they close enough to actually fit in the wrong car?
the pelican guy assured me it was the right axle. and i lined them up on the work bench before i installed the new one. the new one fit, bolted in didnt didnt need to 'streach' from what i could tell....
