IMS Failure, my engine is toast (2005 997S)
Well, my engine is kaput, having just suffered the infamous IMS bearing failure.
It's an out-of-warrantee 2005 997S with 58k miles on it. I change the oil every 5k miles. The SC has nothing to do with the IMS failure, as the bearing can't spin any faster with an SC, it's that simple. So no, the SC didn't tax the IMS bearing. The dealer has it now, and will see what they and PCNA can do for me next week. Apparently, it ranges from complete replacement on them to a swift kick in the pants, and anything in between. I will keep you posted... CATTMAN

Did you have any warning? No death rattle prior to failure?

No warning whatsoever. No death rattle, no metal in the oil, nada.

Sweet Jesus! Sorry to hear that.
Well, I suppose you have two options, if under warrenty ( take it to the man! ) If not, time to go super panic war mode and go big cc and go for broke and draw blood. Good luck!

If you have your car serviced at a Porsche dealer regularly & there is no evidence that the car ever had a S/C on it you have a chance of getting some consideration, otherwise I doubt they will give you anything. I would like to buy the engine for parts if you don't need it for a core.

The SC would have zero impact on the IMS bearing. The bearing wouldn't be under any additional stress due to boost pressure in the case. My dealership is mod friendly, and knows about my SC, and they said to just keep it on for the PCNA inspection and they'd go to bat for me. We'll see...
If I don't need the engine for core exchange, what will you offer me for it? I was thinking of keeping it and using it to tinker/ learn. CATTMAN

SC didn't help, it's going to run hotter, harder, break down oil faster, etc.
Even if you took it off, they could probably tell from the data in the brain. |

Difficult to say how they will view it.

I guess the only thing for those of us who have not yet experienced the IMS failure is to upgrade to the LN Engineering replacement? I only have 25,000 miles on my 996 and I guess now is the time?

Yes, get it replaced, or move to a 997.2.
My 2007 Targa 4S had an IMS failure at 18,000 and needed to be rebuilt (under warranty, thankfully). I'm sure these failures are more rare on 997's, but I can vouch for the fact that they still DO happen. |

I think all the 997s have the IMS that is not replaceable from the out side? Too bad I was hoping this was not happening on 997s. I will reserve judgement on the SC, I would think it would have all sorts of un-intended consequences. I would go with a decent used swap in from a wreck. Probably pretty cheap as there is not much demand for 997 long blacks at this point I am guessing.

Just spoke with a guy in Chicago who had to cancel his track day with us as his 997 motor crapped out too. Damn it's scary when I'm looking to buy one.

Log this failure with NHTSA
Recalls are triggered by complaints to the NHTSA. NHTSA complaints and investigations can be researched at their website: Vehicle Owners | Safercar -- National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) . Complaints can easily be filed there. Between MY 2000 and 2010 there were only 6 IMS failures reported with std or S Boxsters: 1 in 02, 4 in 03, 1 in 04 - not enough to trigger an investigation, much less a recall. See this thread Possible Leverage for failed IMS/engine replacement - Rennlist Discussion Forums
