Used 991 vs. 997
Hello,
I think this is the correct forum for this question. I am considering the purchase of a used 2012 991 vs. a 2010 or 2011 997 as a daily driver. I previously had a 996 as a dd that did not go so well (see previous my previous posts). I typically put 18K miles/year (80% highway) on my dd. Any known issues coming up with the new model? Do you think a 15K mile 991 is worth a $15-20K premium over a 997 with 35K miles and extended aftermarket warranty? The 991 is over my price point but since I don't golf I may be able to budget the extra.

When you say your 996 did not go so well, what kind of problems did you encounter?

One advantage of the 991 is more room in the passenger compartment. If you are tall/large that might be a factor for you.
I think it would be hard to justify that much of a premium over the 997.

That should have been enough to sour me on a 911 as a daily driver. Six years later now I am willing to take the plunge.

Thanks Frank. I think you are right other than the fact the LED and new script looks cool. I am looking seriously at a 30K mile 2010 with PDK at about $60k

Just me but I'd take a 997 any day over a 991.

I think the 991 is too new for most of the issues to raise their ugly head, yet. Just like your 996 didn't give you issues until 50K mi, I think there are very few people who have enough miles on a 991 at this point to show the weaknesses of it, if there are any.
I would take a 997 used any day of the week as a daily driver.

Glenn,
You really need to drive both cars on extended test drives. The DFI cars are really nice. I too am not sure whether spending the extra $ on a 991 is the smart thing just yet - they just came out. I've autocrossed a 991 at Amelia last year, very nice car, but again, the feeling of being disconnected was there... not sure if that was due to the new tires or what... but the 997 has more of a raw feeling... Ergonomics is another thing, I haven't warmed up to the newer look just yet... but as far as exterior styling, the 991 is very sexy. If waiting is an option, I would just wait and feel how the 991 does over the next couple of years. The 997 DFI cars will have better resale value than the 05-08 cars, all because of the IMS scare. |
