Drain Plug Leak After Oil Change - Do Over?
So I was unimpressed to find the K&N premium oil filter I bought online didn't come with a new aluminum crush washer.
I flipped the old one over, and reused it. Now have a leak from oil drain plug, dripping same day onto garage floor. I had torque plug to recommended value, and have since tightened 1/4-1/2 turn more to see if I could get leak to stop. No luck, still leaking. Thought - am I condemned to draining all of the new oil and fitting another drain washer? Anyone vote for further tightening the plug to see if I can get leak to stop? If I do drain, thoughts on putting the drained oil back in motor? Bruce 2002 C4S 105kmiles

Good advice. Will drain oil into clean container and start again.

If one is forced to use a crush washer again, and by forced I mean no access at all like at the track or in the boonies, it is important that:
-both surfaces are clean - washer is not oval - washer is totally flat even if you have to hand mill it on flat surface using 400 grit or so - that old drain plug is not cracked around area just wider than 8mm opening Best to keep a few on hand along with extra aluminum drain plug

Don't drain the oil. Slide your thumb over the hole as you remove the drain plug. Change the washer with your other hand, then replace the plug.
Any loss should be minimal. Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk |

Best solution is buy a new LN magnetic drain plug & crush washer from Pelican and & swap plugs over a drain pan. Should be able to do this & spill less than a quart.

Anyone ever use a Fumoto Oil valve on these cars? I typically put them on all of my cars for simplifying the LOF process. Ground clearance has never been an issue for me. However I'm in the market for a 996tt and would consider this if appropriate.... It eliminates the crush washer conundrum I always found myself dealing with.

A 996 turbo car uses a dry sump system and has two separate oil drains as well.

Very small amount, perhaps a cup.
