2 questions help
I have a 93 325is 5-speed that has just started grinding 2nd gear. Upshift and downshift, not all the time, but fairly regularly. Is this a syncro? I changed fluid yesterday to synthetic to no avail. What gives???
Also just put a M# exhaust on and it sounds great. A lot quieter than the old rusted out one. However, on hard right turns under acceleration, it sounds like the rive shaft is coming through the floor. Is this the exhaust heat shield bumping the differential or the lower control arm?? Any help is greatly appreciated! TIA, Wade |

Nope, just second. Really weird. The car has 165000 miles on it, but it runs and drives great. All maintenance has been done. It is also STOCK other than the muffler, so no track days or other hard driving. This is why i can't figure out the problem. It is not "jumping out of gear" as some of the other cars I have read about. It just grinds BRIEFLY while going into gear.

How do you drive the car? Lots of powershifting? Does it grind if you engage second slowly?

no. I am a district sales manager. I log typically 800 miles a week, so this car has to last me for a while. I baby it. (unless some numskull cuts me off or something. I also will wind it out every now and then. But I do not powershift it. It has never shifted all that well or what I would call smooth. Kind of glitchy, which from researching the web seems to be a characteristic of these cars. Sometimes shifting slower helps, sometimes shifting faster helps. No set pattern.

Replacement usually involves rebuilding the entire transmission. How is your clutch? How is the linkage?

Seems ok. Anything I should look for specifically? I have noticed when I engage or let go of the clutch, there is a slight clunking sound, but I thought that was maybe a bushing or something. All the supension is due to be replaced. Just not enough dough to fix everything at once.
How much typically is a MT rebuild? |

My advice is to give it a couple of days. It takes awhile for the fluid to fully circulate, you'll see more effects about a month after you replaced it. Unless, of course, you changed to synthetic several months ago and it hasnt helped. What fluid are you running?

B&M fully synthetic. Is there another recommendation? I will try anyhing at this point. I really do not see the need for Redline fluids since I do not race or drive it that hard.

I usually reccommend Swepco in there as well. When i first put in my gearbox, I swear that the car shifted better than before.

I've also heard great things about Amsoil, except its pretty hard to find. Redline ATF is also highly recommended. Royal Purple is another good one, yet harder to find. I might just go with Mobil 1 because its available at pep boys and the like.

It seems strange to me that the synchro for only second gear would go out. It seems to me that this would indicate that at one time the car has been powershifted and second was missed, grinding the gears and causing damage.

OOps, i forgot that the newer trannys use ATF. I dont believe that swepco makes an ATF, let me check it.
