Engine start problem

I have this problem for couple years now. When in the morning (cold), or at noon (hot). I would not be able to crank the engine up at the first try. It goes with an "Eee" sound, but the engine is not turning. After couple tries, and the engine will turn. It seems works better if I step on the gas a couple times before I start again. What could be the cause of this problem?

History of the engine: '85 E30
Replaced the engine at 243.5K (2003), now it is at 289.0 K.
Major tune up last year with Spark Plugs, air filter, water plum, and all belts replaced.

Please advice.

I'd check the starter if you pull it off and take it to autozone they should be able to test it for you.

I'll go check the starter. It sounded pretty much it is the problem. BTW it was replaced 3 1/2 years ago with a rebulid, of course.

Can someone explain why stepping on gas seems to help? Is there something I should look at the gas line system?

It would be great to have this fixed. And I can crank up the engine every time. I am worry, in one day, I need to leave in a hurry, and the engine cannot be strated just like seen in the movie-->bad situation waiting to happen...

Thanks for the suggestion.

My guess, or guesses are starter or a relay.

Could very well be the starter, but I would check the battery first. They don't work very well when cold. Hot, they should be okay, but a weak battery combined with a weak starter would also generate this problem...

Stomping on the accellerator pops open the throttle body so you aren't drawing a strong vacuum in the cylinders going down on the intake stroke. Less load on the starter motor so it can crank the engine more easily. Sort of like the reverse situation of compression releases.

Chilly

P.S. Don't go looking for the compression releases on your car.
