Engine Not Wanting to Start

A few months back my car (1992 E30 325iC) died on me. I replaced the fuel filter and that seem to take care of the problem, started right up. Yesterday, it died on me again, except this time when I tried to start it, the engine would almost start but never finish. After waiting 10 minutes I tried it again and it started but a loud squeal came from the engine for about 2-3 seconds. A few minutes later the car died again, this time I had to wait an hour before it started, same 2-3 squeal, but finally made it home. Car starts just fine now, but am afraid to drive it. Any ideas on what this might be?

Thanks

A load squeal from the engine sounds like a belt. That is where I would start.
