Turbo Conversion on 3.0 SC Winter Project
Hi guys,
I'm undertaking a turbo conversion on my 1980 3.0 SC this winter. I have been reading Pelican posts for well over a year and have finally got round to finally collecting the parts and planning it out. I also have the manuals for the 'BAE Turbocharging kit' and 'SOK supercharger kit' both of which are very useful. I will defiantly need some help and advice from the knowledgeable people on the Pelican Forums. I will list as many photos as I can and parts used etc My lists of parts : OBX 930 Headers - £350 Wastegate – Tial 46mm 0.5bar Spring - £485 KKK 3LDZ Turbo - £150 Universal Intercooler - £80 BOV - £TBA MSD Boost Retard Module - £TBA Zork Tube - £150 Intercooler Pipes - £25 Silicone Hoses - £80 aprox TurboKraft Oil Feed Kit - £200 Porsche reducer socket for engine to oil line feed - £18 Oil Scavenger Remote Pump - £100 Various Gaskets, nuts and bolts - Genuine Porsche - £70 Braided Oil Line - £40 Alloy Oil Line Fittings - £16 Boost Gauge - £30 930 WUR - £125 930 Turbo intake side 'S' pipe - £75 Make 930 WUR Adjustable - TBA (or do it myself) 6m of vacuum/boost hose - £15.00 Produce steel air flow meter bonnet - £90 Produce support for intercooler - TBA The OBX headers and oil pump will be with me by the end of the week. I intend to use the scavenger pump to return oil to the main oil tank. I am currently thinking of ways to provide additional fueling. Option 1 : Get my WUR modified. Not sure if this would provide the fuel when required. i.e as boost comes on! Option 2 : Buy & install the unwired Digital WUR kit - Looks great with loads of tuning options, but expensive. Option 3 : I have just got a 930 WUR really cheap and wondered if that will install and work in place of my standard WUR, the 930 WUR has the vacuum port to detect boost and add additional fuel. On the rear of the throttle body there are several vacuum ports, they are blocked off when the turbo conversion is done and the decal valve removed etc. Is this where I plumb in the BOV and if it works the 930 WUR vacuum line? ![]()

Brian from rarlyl8.com advised that the 930 WUR would work fine provided it was made adjustable so it could be tuned to work correctly with the SC fuel distributor.
OBX headers and turbo mount bracket have arrived. ![]()

How much HP do you think it will produce?

Well your still limited to .5 bar or so. 245hp is my guess.

The engine had a complete rebuild 8 months ago with some upgrades including :
993 Cams RS Spec Cut Valves Ported & flowed heads Plus my previous upgrades like MSD, Magnacore Wires, Fabspeed exhaust system. It made 227-230FWHP (Plus 214lb ft Torque) If I can get 280+FWHP I'll be happy, shouldnt be a problem going by other peoples results on standard engines. ![]() ![]()

That is good results. Your build is made for those results but now your adding pressure to high compression. This is where you'r going to either need race gas, twin plugging, or low pressure/excellent intercooling. I change my previous guess to .4 bar and keep the 245hp guess. With a change to lower compression pistons everything changes though and you can run more boost and lots of power.

Luckily its a 1980 3.0 with 8:5:1 or could be 8:6:1, different source's say different results, either way from reading other conversions on 3.0 and 3.2 motors 0.5 bar should be well within the limits.
Ounce I'm done I'll pop the car to a specialist Porsche tuner not too far away and get them to tweek it on the rolling road for best results and no detonation. I'll post the results ![]()

Completed my SC turbo conversion around six months ago. Mine has the 9.8 compression ratio and has efi and an inter cooler, otherwise bog standard, so boost is kept at .4 bar. Had it on the dyno and got 211 kw's at the wheels.

211kw, so thats about 286hp, nice
![]() EFI is a route I may take later on. Matysiak, was it a Bitz racing EFI kit or something else?

Was a local South African company called Spitronics. Fully tunable and cost less that 250 pounds.

Was that a 3.0 conversion? I'm lazy to look up your install post (it was a great one, which I printed out). Have you considered going up to .5Bar? |

The car was dentonating ( in audible) at .5 bar. The guy doing the tuning bolted something to the block during the dyno, so .4 bar is all I can get. Running 95 octane as well.
My car is running OBX headers, fitment was fine. |

Hi Baloo,
Yeah no problems, as soon as they are on I'll post how it went and pics.

Oil pump arrived today.
Image with 930 WUR. The WUR is part number 0 438 140 160 Think its off a 964 Turbo 3.3, so will probably need lots of adjustment to get it working correctly with my setup. Im going to get a CIS fuel pressure test kit and check all my pressures before I begin and use them as a base. Then modify and adjust the turbo WUR accordingly if possible and start tuning from there. ![]() ![]() ![]()
