Turbo charging a short stroke 3.2, what do I need?
Hi all you turbo lovers! First I want to say thank's in advance for any information I can get. I really do appreciate it.
I'm sorry to ask I'm sure this has been discussed ad nauseam. I was hoping I could get some idea's on what parts I need to add a turbo to my short stroke 3.2. It's going into an 83 911SC. I was wondering if I should use the 930 intake manifold or the Carrera? Can I use an aftermarket throttle body? Is there aftermarket linkage? I'm going to make it an EFI engine. I'm going to use the 930 transmissions. Should I use the short bell housing or the later long bell housing? What would be the easiest to put in an 83 SC? I guess what would be the best intake system soup to nuts. I'm thinking I will use the Fabspeed headers unless someone has a better idea. I can't afford a factory 930 so I will have to do it myself. I have a lot of work to do on the body so I have some time to collect the parts for the turbo. Use any throttle body you like if doing an EFI conversion. On a stock one, only need to swap the TPS for one that gives more than idle/WOT readings. 930 long bell is too long to fit into a 911 without shortening, so 915, SBH 930 or SBH G50 are the only realistic options. Depending on just how radical you intend to go, note that with care and forethought/preparation, a 915 can survive just fine for years - and with a fast-spooling turbo and a responsive motor (eg EFI) is a very fun car. You don't say whether you're planning to drop the compression ratio in order to run "real" boost levels. If you do, you should probably plan on something stronger than a 915, at least for the medium-term. Either a 930 or a G50 transmission will comfortably handle much more power than a stock 930 makes. I put a 930 engine in a '78SC years ago (see old threads of the Red Rocket), man that was a fun car!
If going EFI you can save some headache using the Carrera intake and EFI system. Mods will be needed but that is well documented when turbocharging a Carrera engine. Short bell 4spd is a nice touch that makes things easy. You'll need to oil the turbo and change the fuel system then think about some brakes … Glad to help with the exhaust, we've done a few of those. ![]()

Turbokraft has a kit to feed a single turbo in the stock location. It has the proper sized adapter with banjo fitting to tee into the oil pressure dummy light, the same as the 930 used. That's what I used and just made my own stainless lines from there.
I would definitely use the 3.2 Carrera manifold. With the stock fuel rails, it makes the fuel system a simple matter of collecting the right sized fittings. You can get aftermarket injectors that drop in with the stock rails as well. Here's a list of sensors you'll want: intake temp, MAP, throttle position, fuel pressure, wide band O2, crank and cam position, cylinder head temp, and finally knock sensors if you want to run the car closer to its limits.

What is the compression on that 3.2ss? That might limit the potential very much.
If moderate to higher power is your goal you may need to rebuild the top end to get the compression down. A modest budget for quality bits from what I have seen in my search would be $6k-10K just for the engine set up depending on the headers, turbo, and intercooler used. You could go much higher if you wanted. I had planned to use a 3.2L intake manifold on my 3.0SC. The 930 Short trans would hold the power well, and was my intention when I was considering a turbo set up. I was looking at a budget of $8-12k. |
