Question Wastegate Muffler

If i remove this..... (and put a straight pipe in place of)

Will the sound drive me crazy?

Or does it make a nice Poping noise, woosh sound (god i love the turbo noise)?
Any flames to concern myself about?

Like this?

You'll only hear it when the wastegate opens.....and it sounds like a crackling afterburner!

Always entertaining to time it so it opens just as you pass the open window of a Prius or Smart Car...........

Can I assume it is open at about 5500 RPM on full boost (or .08 bar)? I want to make sure the Prius driver hears it!

It's not really that big of a deal.....no flames, no broken windows, no scared running children.

Just more noise under full boost.

When you take your foot off it, boost releasing?
In short, How do i get that noise louder....... Other 930's have it?

Is that the exhaust (engine)?

I was taking my car to it's new garage the other day. I took my uncle along with me as he witnessed the building of the car but had not experienced the finished car. So I gave him a ride from my shop to the house. Well...........I strap him in and we are off to the house (he's in his 70's).

On State Road 80 there is a daily visited Sheriff officer in a unmarked Charger that loves to nail everything in site that he can. (Yes, I did completley forgot about the pr*^*!)

I pull on to State Road 80 as the traffic stopped at the light and I pull out and stand on it as we all love to do...... I only did a 1st, 2nd, blast and then took it down to 45 thinking I should be OK. wrong!!! My wife is behind me in my truck, and after I let off from 2nd the Escort in the truck starts beeping away. My wife is laughing as when open waste gates open up if anyone is near it they WILL rip their heads in your direction immediatley. And the cop was finishing up with a client and was trying to reposition himself to line up for another client. Well I... end up getting his attention real quick with my 1, 2, blast. She said she watched him fumble with the radar gun as he dropped it. I atleast had it up to 100+ before I let off. I drove about 1.5 miles and looked in my mirror and noticed the COP finally behind me. You know that feeling you get when you realize you just been busted. Cruising at 45 waiting for him to signal me over. He finally pulls me over and as he is coming out I got out of the car as well. (For some reason COPs don't like it when you get out of the car??? at this time my wife calls too, I have to call you back!!!!!!!) I apologize and explain my showing off to my uncle, which isn't a care in the world to the cop. The officer first tells me he clocked me at 70 after I shut it down, I couldn't argue. He then takes forever to write the ticket or atleast it felt like it. And finally comes to me happy as can be with a new piece of paper with a convienent self addressed stamped envelope and say's I gave you a break becauce I could have charged you double in a construction zone, so $231 it is. Then he say's man that is a sweet car...... Why don't you donate it to the Sheriff's aggressive driving division? You can only imagine my thoughts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bottom line when you romp on it with a unmuffled wastegate, it is going to attract attention. Just make sure the coast is clear.

I love when the wastegate open up and on deceleration. My friend said that it sounds like a popcorn maker. I said if popcorn maker sounded this good, I would be eating popcorn 3 times a day and open movie theater and serve free popcorn for everybody. It is music to my ears.

Brian sent me one of his stainless wastegate dump pipes....or zork...or whatever they call it....and all I can say is .....Oh My! When you are at WOT and blow by someone while you're hard on 2nd or 3rd....they do have a tendency to look over your way quickly. I had no idea it was as noticeable as it was until I drove under a long overpass and hit WOT to hear the feedback.

Benny-

I just went through this last month, and cannot believe I waited this long to loose the WG muffler. Call up Brian here (RarlyL8 above) and get one of his stub pipes and giggle all the way home.

It's quite addictive, and amusing. My poor MPG which was bleh before has now suffered insurmountably as I'm always f'n STUFFING it.

Oh, and, while you're at it - if you're looking for pop:

Have a gander a few threads down about loosing the decel valve. Throttle-lift has never been so entertaining - I now find myself looking forward to decel opportunities. Coupled with my recently added dual outlet exhaust which was pretty poppity as it was, I'm simply giddy with each stab AND lift of the loud pedal now. It's downright redonkular.

The popping spitting gargling it now emits sounds like Beavis laughing uncontrollably - which funny enough is what I too am relegated to in the driver seat - laughing like JoJo the Idiot Circus Boy - and I love it.

Go for it - report back. Beware Johnny Law 8-)...

I guess I'm confused by what the OP wants. The popping and flamage and such really doesn't come from the wastegate. That's more of a turbo exhaust/muffler thing. And as Paul pointed out above ^^^^, disabling the decel valve and some of the other smog bits will also help with the effects. The open wastegate dump pipe has a very distinct "WOOOSHING" sound...sorta like a jet! Yeah it's loud, but nothing that will land you in the slammer for sound alone...it's the speeding that'll getcha!

I've been stopped by the man because he heard my wastegate open, which by the way, is now on your car SandMan. So your exhaust has "history". Didn't get a speeding ticket 'cause I wasn't speeding ...

A low restriction muffler will allow the good sounds and flames to come out. A waste gate dump pipe will allow even more sound and less restriction on the exhaust system.

LOL!!! What's funny about the one I bought from you, is that because of the funnel shape, the pipe has a very unique sound...less of a "WOOOSHING" and more of a run-away locomotive when it opens!!! I have an appointment with my favorite "shade tree" muffler shop next week to have it custom fitted so that it better matches the passenger side! I miss it dearly!

The sound isn't much greater, just a louder woosh during boost dump.

The only real concern is when you put the car on the dyno, you need to make sure there are no straps under the waste gate dump.

Benny, if you get rid of the wastegate can, it will be much louder (it will have more of a scream) I think Brian has an alternative pipe that could assist you with this instead of cutting up the stock muffler (actually worth something to someone.)
When releasing the throttle, the noise that you are looking for is a blow off valve and those dont work very well on these cars unless they are setup with diffrent fuel injection. Honostly you could get more turbo noise out of the car with a wastegate dump tube and an aftermarket muffler.
