Interesting Thread

I am glad I found this interesting thread today. Yesterday while at my local independent Porsche shop I saw a beautiful red slant nose beast in one of their engine bays . My Porsche technician said hop in let's go for test ride and I never turn down one of his invitations beacause they are always extraordinary. And this test drive was no exception.

Make no mistake about the car it was fast as as stink but not as fast as some of the Porsche's he has taken me in test drives, but what amazed me was the special quality of the car. Low mileage, all original and unique in every respect. Even the 3 piece 16" BBS spoke rims incredible.

I think the car was an original 1986 European Turbo 930 that was converted to a factory steel flat nose 935 coupe replica and at the same time received several performance modifications. The technican and I estimated the horsepower to be somewhere between 350 - 400 but no more. On the whail tail it said twin plugged 3.6 liter turbo. Inside the engine compartment I saw what appeared to be an real early Electromotive fuel injection setup.

There were Ruf decals on both fenders but a factory Porsche crest on the hood not a ruf decal. I am almost positive it is not a Ruf creation. I think someone put the Ruf decals on the car instead. The car has a unique set of Recaro electric seats with the controls on the bolsters and lots of other unusual interior treatments including a brass plate on the glove box lid that said something to the effect of "Especially made for XX by Bavarian Coach Werks (I think) and Porsche Meister of West Carrollton, Ohio. Inside the engine compartment was another decal with the same information. A quarter window decal had reference to ********.

I can't find any reference to a Ruf builder in Ohio nor can I find a builder for a 935 replica. I suspect they are no longer in business.

Has anyone heard of the builder?

There is a red 1989 930S cab. listed on Ebay right now. The owner is posting the quantity of 89 930S cabs. made with updates as others write in. Sometimes you will see 28 cabs. made on these listings but the intercompany memo that we have earlier in the thread lists 75 cabs made in 89. I am not sure if this is worldwide or M505 for the US.

Does anyone have more info from a factory issued document? It would be nice to turn up something.

I am hoping to start looking for an 89 cab. at some point in the near future and would like to know.

The item number is: 2205 4607 7249

Here is some of the conversation.

"HELLO EBAYERS! A FELLOW PORSCHE ENTHUSIAST GAVE ME PRODUCTION FACTS FROM THE PORSCHE BOOK "EXCELLENCE WAS EXPECTED" THAT STATES ONLY SEVEN M505 SLANTNOSE CABRIOLET'S MADE IT INTO THE USA MARKET OUT OF 41 MADE WORLDWIDE SO KEEP THAT IN MIND WHEN BIDDING ON THIS SPECIAL CAR. ALSO WHEN I DESCRIBED THE CAR IT IS SUPPOSED TO SAY THE CAR IS FREE OF ANY DAMAGE OF ANY KIND."

"1989 only produced 32 slantnose option 505 cars in Europe and 147 in the United States. I have received a few differant claims on Cabriolet figures but most Porsche connoisseurs agree on 41 and how many of those are in the States I have not been able to verify."

"Q: Hello Jeremy, congrats on having owned such a beautiful part of Porsche history. In regards to your production # info I can firmly say that there were 7 USA m505 cabriolets made in 1989. Total 1989 cabriolet m505 production worldwide is in fact 41. Jan-27-10
A: Thank you very much Rolf! I will update my auction with this information. Kind Regards,"

Who is Rolf that is firmly saying there were 7 made?

Nothing against him, just trying to find out how come he is firm on this.

Any ideas?

That may be the infamous Rolf Sprenger, father of Porsche's Exclusive Programme and designer of the Special Order and Special Wishes Slantnose.
I checked the production numbers for the slantnose M505 for MY '89 from Peter Morgan's book, Original Porsche 911 and they do match; 147 U.S., 32 RoW, but he didn't give any numbers as to how many were cabs.

I know of about 18 89 factory sn cabs.

I know there are many non-factory.

That may be the same Rolf. I met him in 98 at Monterey.

Porsche MEMO

I am looking (as I type) at a Porsche Interoffice Memorandum dated May 5, 1989 and titled 'Slantnose History - Slantnose production since Models introduced to the U.S. Market.' It includes numbers for 87,88 and 89. Posted below, '89 only:

In 1989 the official numbers (US NUMBERS ONLY):

Coupe 60
Targa 8
Cabriolet 75

Hope it helps.

With only 349 Slant coupes ever made for the USA you would think these things would be going for north of 100k.....

Everyone I meet on the road drools over the car... Maybe it needs another 10 of 20 years before its a true classic...

I think that is true. The USA Factory SN were only 3 years, '87 to '89, and you figure at the 25 year mark they might begin a steady march upwards. By 30-35, you should easily see $100K+ cars. INMO, the Slantnose optioned cars Oare gonna be a REAL sleeper...especially the '89's.
