Has your 930 ever left you stranded?

With a 2500 mile road trip just around the corner my thoughts have turned to how reliable a thirty year old German performance car may or may not be.
Has your 930 ever left you stranded? Let's not include dead batteries and running out of fuel. Perhaps hearing about other failures could help to prevent the same thing from happening to me

I'm planning on taking my 80 930 to Turbopalooza that's 2600 miles.. I will have tools, hope for the best, and broadcast on PP when I'm leaving and where I'm going,, if anything happens I hope to have the whole board ready and willing to help me out if needed.. I'll be buying beers all the way even if it runs like a clock!

I have not experienced those kind of problems yet. My car normally starts on the second crank after sitting up to six months.

I would think driving your car would make it more eager to go.

Has your car ever let you down yet?

I think it is great that you are taking your car on such a long road trip. It will probably be very good for the car.
I have been stranded only once, it was the fuel pump relay. I would take some extra fuses and also an extra fuel pump relay just in case. Good luck and have fun.

Left me stranded? Every time I drive it...so I have decided not to ever drive it and just leave it in the garage and look at it...museum piece?

Yes. Lost a chain tensioner on a hot start from a stop light. Took out valves, pistons, and the crank.

Stranded? But of course, but luckily within a short towing distance back home (my wife has been very accomodating in that regard). As to leaving it in the garage to just "look at and pet occasionally", Yasin you're twisted! But if the truth were known, mine is in the garage in various states of disassembly as we speak, following my stupid over-torquing and breaking the IC mount on the recirc valve housing. And of course while I'm in there, a bunch of other stuff just needs to be done.

Road trip? Carry extra fuel pump relay(s), and maybe the magical mystery yellow overboost relay as well. And a couple of orange IC O'rings just in case you blow one. Spare fuses as well. Not much else you can anticipate. Maybe stuff a box with a spare fuel pump, turbo, distrubutor, CDI, WG, some vacuum hose, spare spark plugs, just general stuff like that.

And some NASA dehydrated food bags in case your power door locks fail, leaving you helpless and stranded inside your car.

Just once, blew a fuel pump fuse.

If I had thought to check that (Doh!) I would have been down a total of what ... 2 minutes maybe?

Yes...
Once it stranded me in front of a bar during happy hour right before a huge thunderstorm. The ignition coil took a sh.. that time.
That one could have been alot worse.... ....

Other times the fuel pumps just decide to stop running or won't come on when you try to start the car.
The fuel pump relay circut and the yellow relay overboost relay get flakey and unreliable after 25 years.
I'm going to put in a 30 amp toggle switch somewhere to send 12 volts directly to the fuel pumps from the battery with no hobbs switches or anything else that can f... up as a backup for when that happens.

And... I put male spade terminals on the ignition coil primary wire terminals and female spades on the primary wires so I can quickly try the other ignition coil with male spade primary terminals on it that I now carry in the front trunk as a spare if that happens again.

If I was going on a long trip I would get AAA first...
I don't trust these cars piggybacked, overengineered, and overloaded electrical systems or their eccentric tiny little overpriced wimpy alternators at all.

I haven't driven mine on a long trip since I brought it home from Memphis, TN to Charleston, SC 9 years ago. I have driven the snot out of it on the track these past 9 years without issue.

I think it would be wise of eveyone to bring a few essentials: relays, fuses, wire, oil, fan belt, some hand tools, etc.

If you are going to track your car, make sure you have GOOD pads that are nearly new and flush the brakes with a good brake fluid. I use the Ford HD brake fluid or ATE Blue or Gold.

Stranded three times....Bosche CDI box fried...replaced with MSD...linkeage in the accelerator at the throttle body....yellow relay in the back fuse box.

My Emergency kit compose of extra fuel pumps for front and back pumps, completed set of extra fuses and relays, multimeter, basic set of metric sockets and open end wrenches. Then there's that ALL IMPORTANT AAA service PLUS card that give me 4 X100 mile tows per year. I used three in one year. Luckily all my crap outs were within 40 miles of home...and it takes a while till you get those nastly little gremilns ferreted out so that you have the confidence to take it beyond your 100 mile tow limit.....just kidding. Once it's dialed in...it's fun.

Mine has left me stranded a few times, one was the CDI box, one was the a relay in the rear working loose. The others were bigger issues that couldn't be prevented or fixed by the road side

Twice in about 15K miles. First was the 8-fuse panel in the front trunk. First week I owned it, so I didn't even have any spares on me when the item failed, so I had to have the car towed. Second time was while my brother-in-law was driving it. CDI and coil crapped out on him. Again, had to have it towed.

Rear wheel bearing 20+ years ago. Ignition about 10 years ago. MSD since no problems.

Common denominator seems to the yellow relay in back...some fuses, fuel pump relay, and the CDI box.
