Ricks Stage 2 Carrera Turbo Build 485hp

I thought I'd post this in here.

Rick has been working on this for a while and has done a great job of it, decompressed to 8.5:1 with C2 turbo head gaskets and .5mm base gaskets.

Stage 2 is rated at 485crank at .85bar by Proto, should be quite a weapon in a narrow body, pretty much CTR specs! Very cool. You can also see some of Brian's handy work hanging off the back.

He;s still running it in but says the power is already pretty brutal.

Well done Rick!

here is more info on the build:

Rick's engine rebuild starts in Cleveland

Very nicely detailed motor there, down under. Any tuning you have to do next? Or plug and play Protomotive reworked DME? And that's some hot rod targa to boot (I mean boost). Is the flame expected to propogate at all out the rear?

That is some spring time top down fun you are building there.

Cheers.

Not mine buddy, it's Rick Chipa's he will chime in I'm sure.

I can say it looks like a Protomotive FPR which is very plug and play, I use one too, very easy!

Don't know about flames, here's for hoping though! I would doubt EFI would flame as much as CIS or MFI though, more precise fueling...

Just an observation but Rick is really testing the limits of that 3 wheel engine stand. I mounted my engine on a 750# stand just like that and once fully dressed it became very unstable. I now have a 1000# stand with 4 wheels.

When can we see some YouTube? I wanna watch that baby light 'em up!

+1 on the engine stand. I upgraded to a 4 wheeler as well. As Brain said, it gets a bit unstable fully dressed. It also allowed me to remove the engine with a jack instead of a crane.

Gearbox has been rebuilt, upgraded clutch, should hold up if he treats it well, time will tell... Brian runs one with success but at a lower power level.

A shortened g50 would be sweet eventually, budget permitting.

Thanks for all the good comments. I have about 50 miles on it and got to 4000 rpm tonight. Still breaking it in. So far I am very satisfied with the build. A very streetable setup.

The gearbox is a weakspot. I am not into pulling holeshoots so hopefully it lasts.

I actually had no problems with the engine stand, it does look a little light, but I purchased it to work on my dads 429 ford marine engine and it held that fine too.

Thanks Again,

The Carrera 915s are the strongest ones made. If you ever tear it down put in the WEVO bearing retainer and all should be good. You know not to beat on it and with that power you won't have to!

Hi Rick Chip:
I am going the same route as you did. Would like to know where did you find the 0.5 shims and C2T head gaskets? Through Pelican? Also, did you changed the fuel pump or used the stock Carrera? Different chip map than the stage one?

Thanks in advance,
Francisco Soto

Hi Francisco,

All my engine part work was done by Walt at Competition Engineering in California and I got the shims and C2 turbo gaskets from there also. I am using the stock Carrera fuel pump so far, I have about 150 miles on it so far, and the chip came from Todd at Protomotive Engineering.Yes the chip is mapped differently from a stage one.

Thanks,
