alternator warning light Diode
Ok here is a good one i finally found my random no start low battery charge problem. the diode in the alternator warning light circuit is bad. Which believe it or not according to the manual does not allow the battery to charge. looked the part number up 911.617.108.00 is no longer available,WTF? What is the problem with just bypassing it? Will it damage anything?

I disconnected the diode and plugged the wires into each other. As far as i can tell from reading the manuals is the diode is only there to keep the light off if the alternator is charging. It now comes on like it should when starting the car. Then goes off once it's started, and now it's charging correctly at 14 volts. So if any one knows why i shouldnt just drive it this way until i can get a new diode, let me know.

Hello Ken,
When that diode went bad on my car several years ago, the engine would not shut off with the key but all the gauges and accessories would. I was able to find one from our host when they were still available but I have heard that VW uses the same diode. |

the tech manual says it can continue to run because the engine stop delay relay will still have voltage. however the engine stop delay relay on mine hasn't ever worked. lol So i think i am good for a while i know it's also a Volkswagen part the insulation boot on it even has the vw logo but i cant find a vw part number for it.

yes it's behind the dash. just pull the gauge out and there will be a red and black wire connected to the Alternator warning light. that wire is about 3 inches long and then has a funny looking plug, thats the diode. If it or the light is burned out your battery will not charge. The red black wire is supposed to read battery voltage with the key on.
