What Steve McQueen would have ordered in 1991. My build.

Ok. I wanted to build something a little different. This is a 1991 C2 Turbo that I bought from Cory Jump at Planet 911. It will be painted 1968 Non Metallic Slate Grey. The same color Steve Mcqueen always ordered. I also plan on having Gary Stratton build me a custom DUCKTAIL. Seats will have Hounds tooth inserts. The interior will be Lightweight RSR. I am a purist and HATE sunroofs... We have just completed the Sunroof Delete. We also took a little trick from RUF.... The deletion of the Rain gutters, as he did on the Yellowbird. The C2 3.3 liter motor will be replace with a 3.6 liter Turbo Brumos Race motor that I bought a few years back. The goal is to have a light weight dual purpose Turbo with around 500hp. I really like the styling of the white car..964R that was built in California. Here are a few pics. Feedback and ideas are welcome. Thanks, Tate

Don't feel like you stole anything from RUF, the 959 had no rain gutters since 1983. The yellow bird came out in 1987. Good luck with your project...looking forward to see the outcome.

Thanks everyone. Paul. I am heading down to Savannah this weekend and will go to the Porsche Parade events on Monday Aug 1st. Lincoln, I can't wait to hear all about your new engine and I have been reading your posts. This C2 has the original G50-52 which should be able to handle the horsepower. It also has a set of Bilstein PSS 9 Coil overs. I plan to leave the brakes stock. The wheels will be painted in a black, "crackle" finish. Rich Dean at Classic Design in Athens Ga is doing all of the fabrication and paint work. This will be the 7th car that he has built me. He is one of the best fabricators in the southeast. He paintwork is flawless. We are stripping the car buy hand this week. I will post pics as soon as I get them. Thanks, Tate

Will be watching this one with interest, like the idea of loosing rain gutters and sunroof.... Will you be going with narrow rear arches like the white car? And the little mirrors? Looks purposeful.... I must admit to being very tempted to drop the impact bumpers on mine and go cleaner, like the CTR.
Post plenty of pics, we all love pics

Jonathan, The white car actually has narrow front fenders and wide rears. I will keep the fenders stock on this C2 turbo. I love the look of the 1973 RSR cars. Here are a few things that I am wrestling with:
1. Mirrors. Keep stock or go with the small 935 mirrors? I am on the fence.
2. Wheels. I like the stock 17" wheels but am very tempted to go with a set of 18" wheels. Rich Dean says that I will need much more meat on the ground and I think he might be right...
3. A/C. I hate the extra weight and I have never had a unit that ever worked in a 911. My builder assures me that the C2 A/C is drastically better than the previous units. Is is Damn hot down in Ga/NC right now....

Ah, it's the narrow fronts that threw me, indeed it has fat rears.... Looks good like that, i like it!
The chap that ownes it posts on Rennlist, nice fella, we've chatted about the arse ache of fitting 993 turbo engines into older motors.... It's a LOT easier into a 964 than a 930....

Personally i'd not bother with the stock aircon, but it might be an idea to see what after market modern stuff you could adapt and fit??

I drove a 1991 C2 Carrera as a daily driver in Dallas Tx. and Jacksonville Fl for several years. The factory AC was good enough to keep me comfortable in summer, but not cold, even in a suit.

From my experience, you've gotta have good A/C, or you won't drive it - - just too uncomfortable in these southern climates [New Orleans...] I went with Griffiths for a 3-condenser system [front, behind rear tire, and rear decklid]. Also upgraded the evaporator and blower motor - - it was the difference between driving and parking through the Summer...

Heck, I never thought of that - - I'm only using snow tires in February... I'll go all Winter next year

Truf-fully, I put a lot of miles on mine in the winter - - 50's-60'sF is really nice driving...

Very nice build, I like your direction. The small mirrors look trick but are a beeatch to drive with in traffic... aero mirrors look great and are way more functional. 18'' s are probably a no brainer for the greater footprint you can acheive, not to mention they look 'right' on a 964 Turbo ala 3.6. Here are some pics of McQueens 930 for further inspiration.

Here you go Paulie, and Yes.... I have a slate grey problem.... it is actually called Granito. I was up in your neck of the woods not long ago at the Greenwich Concours D Elegance. Beautiful part of the country. The Maserati is one of less than 300 built with the 599 Ferrari paddle shifter trans. It sound like a formula one car. Enjoy. Tate
