I bought Mark's replacement car today. IF he wants it, and has the means to purchase it (due in large part to this great effort that we are all participating in). If not...well then I have two...but really I will find another buyer most likely. Here she is:

More pics: '87 930 GPW - Asbury

Car has tons of documented maintenance. Complete engine overhaul (case was split) at ~105k miles. A quick top end job at 137k (primary issue at that time was a broken headstud), with new clutch and trans rebuild. Current mileage ~143k.

Don't have it home yet...my trailer is buried in a glacier at the moment. It was hours of work just to get to this point:

I'll wait until this crap melts then go fetch the car.

Holy sh@t, Jacob - how badass is that!?

And since I seem to be so obsessed with the "moon" smileys as of late, here is my tribute to you -

Jacob, that is an awesome contribution. Locating a good deal and then being willing to "pass it on" is freaking awesome.

What a great deed. I wish you all the best of luck.

Nice car! roll cage already in it too.
Looks like a set of rennline monoballs should go in on the tops of the front struts after cleaning out the remains of the original rubber ones and dried out water seal stuff around them.
The monoballs are easy to install and the rennline ones work and look real nice and let you install a rennline shock tower crosmember on the top of them.
The polished aluminum rennline instrument rings can be pulled off and sanded with 320 grit sandpaper and sprayed with satin black paint if you prefer them black. Thats what I did.

Good for you on doing this!
most excellent.

^Thanks Jim. So I was thinking of pulling the cage out, and selling it. It's nice for a track day car (which was PO's intent), but for a street car it makes entry and exit difficult. The cage has been modified with extra gusseting and has the adjustable seat back braces welded in too. The PO is a former pro race driver, so put safety at the very top of the list.

Along with the cage, I was going to pull the Sparco race seats out and put the stockers back in. The stock seats are damn near perfect. I think they were replaced or recovered at some point.

Can those Rennline instrument trim rings just be popped off to return to stock, or is it more involved than that?

Yes, they come with pieces of thin foam sandwich double sided tape you stick in the backside of them and they just press on over the original rings then.
They should pry off with your fingers. If they resist you can remove the instruments and heat them up a with a hair blow dryer to soften the sticky stuff holding them on and they should pry off easily.

I put them on mine because the original VDO rings weren't looking too good. I did fine sand mine and spray them with satin black krylon enamel and I also put a little black silicone glue into the back side of them to assist the tape that comes with them.

You can buy new original VDO black rings and glass from NHS and install them yourself but thats alot of work and the rennline rings were overall cheaper and go on over the top of the original ones easily.

You can see my rennline rings I sprayed black in this pic.

Friends, I've been gone off-grid for a couple days playing in the snow at my cabin, and just got back to see this! Holly $**** batman, I'm hooked. Jacob, I can't begin to thank you enough for what you've done on my behalf. Other than the interior color and the non-white painted wheels (I was always on the fence about those anyway), she's a dead ringer for my poor old girl (well, sans the roll cage of course). Good documentation, seems everything is in order. Seems well cared for and you've snagged it at a good price as well!

I'll tell you this....I want it, and with the support I've received I will make it happen one way or the other.

SOFA KING COOL!!!

^That^ is sobeyond undescribably cool of you Jacob. What a find, what a score, what a gesture of amazing coolness.

That thing looks spectacular. And, shoot - the maintenance list has me rather jealous! Wicked forkin kewl!!!

Agreed... sellsellSELL sommadat sheet Jake / Mark!

now

How awesome are we!?!?!?!

What a truly tremendous community we have established and are ohso fortunate to be a part of.

We're $10,500 along and 93 participants deep thus far. Great work! Though I agree, things do seem to have somewhat stagnated a bit.

Here's to hoping that THIS will be a huge shot in the arm of this endeavor!!! Giddeup gents!!!

We don't have too much further to go. We've found (and Jake's BOUGHT) the literal exact car Mark had - same year / color / interior / miles-ish / condition!!!

Let's get Mark IN THIS THING!!!

I plan to put the stock seats back in, thus I will have some fixed back racing seats available for sale. Send me PM for details.

Great to see your enthusiasm after all you've been through. Hope it all works out in the end, it's never easy anyways.

Let's keep this fundraiser goin' guys!
I'm sure we can all sympathize with Mark's unfortunate situation.
Here's a chance to help a guy that has always been a great contributor to this forum.
We need to get him back in a 930 ASAP...and we WILL, if everyone pitches in!

Hey all,

I sent an e-mail over to the Hagerty Insurace folks, hoping that they will pick up on this "advertisment opportunity" and publish the fund raiser link in the next issue of Hagerty Car News.

I hope they take the hint, as it is coming from a current Hagerty customer.

We'll have to see????

Mark

^ Hagerty is currently insuring the '87 GPW that I just bought too...and my '79...and my 911 race car

truth be told I didn't even consider insuring the race car until Mark posted about the garage fire. I called the insurance co. to inquire about insuring the '87 for theft, fire, etc. only (I am not registering the car for street use - don't want to pay sales tax on it). They said "sure we do that" Then I asked them if they covered race cars for the same, and they said they do that too.

I also upped the agreed value on the '79 - given recent events I thought is wise to increase my coverage.

When and if you get this car Mark I think a cruise over to your neck of the woods is in order to welcome it home.

Thanks for taking the initiative, Mark. I tell ya....if they do publish it and we get a good response, Haggerty will be carrying the insurance for my "new" 930....that's a promise.

That would be cool. A tad different than the west side of the cascades (brown is the predominate color here, dust vs. moss on the rocks, and sagebrush masquerading as pine trees), but there are some pretty good canyon runs to be had. The local PCA used to do a run in and around Coulee Dam as a starting point. I let my membership lapse and never joined them, though.
