Threading A Wire Muffler - Dashboard

I am getting AF Gauge (Innovate) and the advice from them is to mount the sensor just before the muffler.

What would be the best way to guide the wire (I am getting the long one, 18 ft so plenty of length) from the muffler to the dashboard?
I would prefer under the car since I would like to avoid ripping my nice custom interior.

Or should I go through the firewall and under the carpets after all? If yes, what is the best spot to go through the firewall?

Thank you,
John

It goes through the tunnel pretty well. That's where I have mine. Some put it under the carpet from the firewall but I like my cleaner rout better.
The tunnel is a butt hole to work but worth it in the end.

Please forgive my ignorance, but could you direct me where would be the entry point and exit point from the tunnel?

I tie wrapped it away from the muffler/exhaust/turbo heat, snaked it under the body and used the shifter below inside the tunnel to go through - not the fire wall, and under the carpet to the dash.

The tunnel is where the tip of the transmission linkage goes through. Or, the front of the transmission.

I've attached a picture. I have an innovate gauge and mine goes through the tunnel.

I made a quick sketch of where mine goes. The first "box" is the o2 sensor, the second is the connection. Then, it runs along the wheel well and goes up towards the shock tower then down to transmission and into tunnel.

Go in through the shift rod entry and come out by the shifter area. You could go all the way past the shifter and up under the dash if you want.
You will want to use a strong wire to either pull the cord or push the cord where you want it. I pulled it. There are obstacles to work around but pulling works if you are patient.

I didn't have the extra length and went up out of the heat into the engine compartment through the tin/skirt and back down over the trans to the shift rod. Then mounted my gauge in the center console.

Thank you so much everyone answering!
Does it make sense to wrap the wire in some sort of the heat shield close to the muffler/turbo? If yes, what would you use as an insulator? Would an aluminum foil do the job?

Sorry for nagging questions if this is the case.

John

Also, there's a grommet towards the back left of the engine bay if you're looking at it from the back. I ran mine up through the tin then around the side of the engine bay and through that grommet. I then ran it under the carpet to the center console where my gauge is mounted.

Grommet in the drivers side rear footwell behind the carpet...easy and no chance of interfering with anything else. Mine has been ran this way for years. I did shrink wrap the wires coming from the sensor to make it a neater install.

Thank you,

You also may want to ad a guide to you harness straps, or a tab to secure movement. Its a safety issue and to not have is not permissible at properly run DE's or schools if you're tracking the car. Just say'n..

Mooney is spot on, with routing.. pretty much how I run mine. Although, I prefer not to use the shift rod opening for entry into the cabin. Instead I use the hole to the left of this which also enters into the tunnel on the other side.. have AFR wiring, and hoses for adjustable boost etc.. wire tied in place.

Car is a Turbo not a Carrera.. so no grommet in the firewall as you describe. If its a later car, I think the indent is there for the cut.

I ran mine the same route Shannon did, but grabbed the grommet in the LR foot box as Ben mentioned - so yes, there is a grommet there on Turbos. It's on the verticle section of the rear of the rear footbox, in the left rear corner.

I don't get the desire to fuss w/ snaking thru the tunnel, when the grommet's there and you just run the wire under the carpet along the tunnel and under the console - exact same results, but sooooo muuuuuch easier (no) effort 8-).

Easy schmeasy.

Ok. cool, I couldn't remember if that grommet was in the tub or not. Seen so many different years lately.

Yeah, snaking through the tunnel is a pain in the arse.. and would prefer something as simple as under the carpet. However, the earlier cars do not have the grommet/access and I hate drilling extra holes in these cars for non factory items.

Uhhh, not that my old girl isn't already quite the bastard with her AJR Slant conversion and other mods!

Yup exactly This is the easiest way to do it and it just makes sense. That grommet is there on my '87 too. It's a big rubber one that had no other wires going through it before I got the car. I just cut a slit in the flat center part with a razor blade and pushed the wire through, etc...

For me, the best route was from tailpipe just after muffler then up through sheetmetal above turbo. This part of the harness is already heat protected.

The sensor harness plugs into LC-1 above relay panel.

Wiring from LC-1 follows other wiring in front LH corner of engine bay down to large grommet in LH rear footwell.

From here, you can run down the LHS under the carpet, or cross over to the tunnel.

I went the tunnel route because I had an LMA-3 under the RH seat.

From the LMA-3, wires to the gauge ran next to the tunnel and up through the front firewall to the gauge which was mounted just below the clock.
