well about to get this paint job on the way.
got a big pressurized blaster but need to decide and get the media. started thinking soda, but read about the residue issue affecting paint adhesion. just tried a little shot of walnut shells. worked great, but need to read some more to determine if they also cause paint adhesion issues. found the most recommendations were for plastic bead, but a bit expensive. drag it out to our side lot and if I use plastic lay down a large area of tarps to capture as much as I can. if I go walnut shells, will just let it go into the gravel... soon ..... very soon ...... test was just a few seconds at 90psi. encouraging.

after some false starts trying to figure out what works, starting to make progress.
got some stripper, turns out the 'good stuff' is being recalled, but found some. when applying the stripper, wiped off after setting for a bit, then tried blasting with walnut shells. initially got the course stuff that clogged in the blast gun. then got the fine stuff and it worked better, but still tended to clog occasionally. finally resorted to 80 grit glass bead. the stripper takes the paint off right now. but the underlying primer is tough. even after spraying with stripper it fights you. so I am now leaning toward just going to fine sand. but still use stripper first. next effort will be using just stripper on the roof, see how much I can get off that way. then I will not have to hit the car hard with the sand, just blast over it lightly to finish off what the stripper did not get. will strip the exterior body but not sure how hard I will work on the interior / engine bay / trunk / etc. areas. may just sand blast lightly to make sure anything loose comes off. talked to the painter and he said not to worry too much about those areas. once clean and all loose stuff gone, clean and paint. but FINALLY we are getting some much needed rain, so will be a couple days before I get back to it. in part my 41st anniversary is Monday, so spend the day with the wife and take her out for a nice dinner. to be continued .......

eventually I just sand blasted. despite one of the strippers saying epoxy, it barely had an effect on the primer. and then when I got to the bondo where the fender flares had been welded even the sand took some time.
at this point I have the exterior of the tub clean. today starting on the interior, then engine bay, then trunk. hope to get this back into the shop in the next few days. then start the cleaning process. and heard from Steve Weiner my engine and brake parts are in process and should start getting stuff shipped back soon.

continued progress. outside done. most of the trunk done and the floor of the interior. hopefully finish the blasting phase in the next couple days. then go back with sand paper and grinder to get the little blobs of rubber / sealer / etc off where needed.
I am going to so much work because I am planning the have the interior pretty spartan and race car like. so want all the potentially visible interior metal totally clean as it will be painted in body color. and you can see my daily sand reclamation process on the first pic.

I've been down this road twice and don't envy you! Used a commercial blasting yard though, went quick. The sand keeps coming out, exactly as other people describe. Lots of compressed air and blow guns with extended nozzles followed with a vacuum.
In the end it's satisfying knowing first hand that nothing is hiding under the paint. Rock on! |

thanks. so far I have not found any significant rust. this is the second time this car went through a sand blast. other guy did not go as far as I have and as I disassembled some areas found sand behind interior parts.

well I think I am done blasting. after finishing the outside body and the interior, took a shot at the engine bay. it seems the engine bay and fenders are all finished with some rubbery feeling surface. the sand barely phases is. I had not intended to strip the under side undercoating. but also looks like something similar is used in these other areas.
so today start getting the sand out and roll this thing back into the shop to continue the cleaning and where necessary grinding.

got it back in the shop. now to continue getting rid of the sand, use grinder where needed, then start cleaning for primer / paint.

as usual, my poor 930 is "sucking hind teet' again. need to get a customer's 944 issues and maintenance done first.
turning the tub on its side on the rotisserie fees up a lot of space.

I have started the final grinding, sanding, cleaning phase.
when all else fails .... inside engine bay, trying to get the old foam and glue off where the pad was glued in. I am sure there is some chemical products that would work but now back inside and not wanting to deal with fumes. not planning to take many of the area that have some rubber undercoat to metal. but tried using sanding / abrasive disks on this and the glue just seemed to smear around and quickly clog the pads. first of my parts on the way from Rennsport Systems... ![]()

making good progress.
burned out the grinder shown, it was old and had been acting like it was on its last leg, but I have another... and think I have worn down or bent over the prongs on that nasty wire wheel shown. not getting stuff off as fast. it is incredible how much putty they smeared all over the inside seams. looks like they applied with a large trowel, looked like 1/2" thick in places. but hey, they were just going to spray on a lot of glue and install carpets, so who cares? I want to get as much as I can to metal and do any seam putty work as concentrated and clean as possible. Why? want to paint the interior same as body color and do not plan to install carpet and other coverings. leave as much interior metal showing as possible, expect where it is just too ugly. going very spartan on the interior and want to keep the weight down. friend coming today to help me with shop vac and blow gun to get as much sand out of the channels and confined spaces as possible. and still have some further grinding to do. then talk to the painter about how to proceed with cleaning / sanding.

continuing to grind off the putty/glue/etc where necessary, mainly the interior.
got a gal of cleaner to start that phase shortly. and went back to cutting out all the sun roof cassette. pics for someone who asked about the courtesy light parts of roof rails. and rebuild another set of calipers for another 944. same goo I found in the last set of calipers. maybe factory original?????

well got the 944 done and when waiting on parts have been also working on the 930.
we're going to be in the low 50s the next few days and I'll be dragging the 930 just outside the bay to do a little more sand blasting. found some areas around the rear torsion tube and the front fenders that could use a little more work. not taking them to metal but get as much surface dirt off before I start with cleaner. in retrospect, wish I had first power washed the bottom and wheel wells before I started sand blasting. interior almost done. also been playing with the calipers. looks like I need slightly longer bolts for the rears. now need to figure out what rotors to order.

I stumbled on a 78 930 clone, built on a 78 SC in the 1989 - 1990 time frame. got it almost a year ago, just could not pass it up. took some crap from my wife about it, as it made the 5th P car I had at the time. just finishing the resurrection of an 87 944S for my bro-in-law, and had not even started work on the 951 DE/street build.
