EFF EWE BMC airfilter of damnitude!!! WTF!?
So, in my pursuit of infinite awesomeness... I'm struggling to install my BMC air filter.
I'm keen to get it installed, as it offers sooooooooo muuuuuuuuuuuuch morererer surface area than the K&N I'm currently running on a Mr. Gasket tin base / cap: ![]() Thing is, the BMC mounts directly to the metering base flange - however - there is NO FOOKIN WAY this thing is stretchin around. It's like an exact fit. There's no dilation / no effacement goin on har! YARGH! I've leaned on it and stretched it with all my (girly) might, to no avail. Get one side on, other pops off, etc. FARQUE! Annoying! I'm thinking maybe soak the rubber flange of the filter (I'd say rim, buuuuuutt) in hot water, then lube the flange (insert Beavis chucklez), and try again? But, before I run out of swear words - might anyone here have experience with such and have secret magical handshake solution to afford an idjut in need I wonder??? TIA, gentz! |

I don't like the looks of squished or damaged pleats on K&N air filters or copies of them and there's a way to install one without bending it.
Put a floor jack under the motor and support it's weight. Then loosen the two rear motor mount bolts and lower the back of the motor down around 5 inches and then there's plenty of room to install the filter on the air flow meter housing. There's no reason to leave the original air cleaner housings metal and rubber gasket on the AFM and the new filter fits better without it. Then raise the motor back up, get the two bolts started, and tighten them. Use some grease or anti seize on the bolt threads so they don't corrode and get stuck in the cross bar and bend it the next time someone tries to loosen them. |

Paul, if Brendon's Astroglide doesn't do the trick, then send the filter to me, I'll errrrr, ummm, have my way with it, and return it guaranteed to fit the metering housing opening!!!

I don't recall it being any challenge to install. Question (and maybe my memory has a whole in it) - but is there a ringed flange on the base plate? I don't know why but I have some memory of removing one on my car when I installed it Paul. I think that may be your problemo buddy...
Yep... Pretty sure that's the issue senor! Scroll down to the section for 911 Turbo / 930 / C2 Turbo Intake: FABSPEED SUPPORT & INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS It says: Remove factory Porsche steel air box assembly. Pry up round steel ring with rubber insert with flat blade screwdriver that was at the base of the CIS plenum. You have to remove this ring as this is where the airfilter attaches with a hose clamp. Install new BMC F1 air filter and tighten hose clamp. P.S. - Text me next time man! I could have answered your question in 5 seconds! Duh! Chris

all's schwell here, Brendon - thanks
busy w/ Mother's Day Weekend Extravaganzadanza, and now @ a conference in South Cackalacky thru Friday um er uh... yeah airbox retaining ring you say, eh? yes, I had no idear (remember, alwayz: I'm noht dat smaht) thanks! (I'm awaiting to hear Ronnie's sharting of hisself in TX all the way here in SC) I'm with you Jim, I'd always seen contorted pleated filters and wondered WTF how'd that happen... yeah - now I know. Agreed, that looks kinda odd. Fortunately, they are somewhat straightenable, and most of the BMC profile is not seen tucked under the bulkhead. It is a bit squished and twisted from my ginormous Popeye arm tho certainly - will require some love to reshape. Thanks fer confirmin my stoopidity... not that I needed any help thar, nope. Lovin the surface area of the BMC tho - hugethanks again, Chris! My motor sucks almost as much as Ronknees on a slow night so the added flow will be great. I'd always speculated my K&N was insufficient for my mods... |
