Can you ID this engine?
Supposed to be a 3.2, but I simply can't decode this engine number - any ideas?

Those stars surrounding the engine number look suspect. Looks to be restamped.

Serial number corresponds to 67S engine, type should be 901/02.

Look at the casting numbers on the case halves. 901 or 930 as first three will clear up a lot.

Definitely a faked serial #. As stated 961057 is a 1967 911S engine serial; however it is stamped in the wrong place. The early aluminum cases have the # stamped facing the rear not to the right, and also have a build # stamped under the type #. The stamped type # here is a clue to the original engine case, but what is within can only be determined by a teardown.

Not necessarily no good. I've got a sand cast case race motor with non-matching case halves. Whoever did the machine work did a good job - everything lines up and measures up from what I can tell. Ran great until I rebuilt it, when some gremlin (unrelated to any geometry) struck.
No good for concours/purity/etc. But otherwise might be a fine engine/case. Do what Matt suggested and let the forum know what the casting numbers are. My guess is it will be 930. If it is 930, pull the clutch and see if it is a 6 or a 9 bolt crank. A 6 would be good, as those are rather rare. |
