Race motor and engine tin?
The engine tin around engine that creates seal is that needed on a track driven air cooled race car?

Personally I would still have them. I want the engine sealed to the body so that any positive air coming through the deck lid goes through the fan and out the cylinders. I don’t want any air bypassing the fan, and I don’t want to draw hot air from other places. I have seen people delete them. What did the factory do? I would guess they made fiberglass versions.

I believe all the Porsche factory air cooled race cars used some sort of "tin".

I like having something to reduce the amount of dust which ends up around the engine. I've fashioned tin substitutes from aluminum, which made me think I was shedding some weight (not much, though). And redone things using Dzus butterfly head fasteners to make the R&R quicker and easier.
Mike's link didn't work for me. |

Sorry about the link-- there was a thread on this in the 911 Forum.
I have never had any trouble keeping my engine and its accessories clean without the engine tin. But I live and race in California, and never in the rain. And I like to keep things clean, so I go through the car after every track event. This includes vacuuming under the pedals which I have found to be very helpful. The only time my engine compartment gets really dirty/dusty is as a result of a go-off or a drive through oil dry. I have had the same car for 20 years and have never run any engine tin. I think it would be very bothersome, even though it doesn't weigh very much. I do have a custom carbon fiber air box for my cone filter to help ensure it gets the coolest air possible. And I have used a custom air diverter to help cool air entering through the decklid get directed into the fan. That is an effort to keep the engine a bit cooler than would otherwise be the case.

Probably ok for a track car that receives regular maintenance. However road debris ends up wherever it wants. Any semblance of lube oil or grease on, around and under the engine cooling shroud will act as a magnet. I believe dirt can be an effective insulator as well as compromise the borderline “racing” air filters many racers prefer to use or decline to use (I.e. screens, tea strainers, rain hats, etc.).
