Crush washers
I thought it would be nice to have a supply of aluminum washers. So, I ordered washers for 6 & 8 mm. I got bags with labels saying Wurth, pull from stock. I hope they didn’t have some poor employee count out 100 washers for each bag. Although one bag had a 6 mm label and the other an 8 mm label, the washers were all identical. In use the washers are so soft that the alloy flows into the threads between nut and stud. I can see how this would help to prevent oil leaks, but it also prevents disassembly. I had to replace a couple of studs because the alloy glued itself to the threads and tore the ridges off when I tried to back off the nut. Bruce Anderson comments about this in his book on engine building.
Question though is how to get better quality stuff. I am hoping to avoid the thousand percent markup because the box has the Porsche crest on it. However, if they do quality control maybe it is worth it. Thanks folks. I figure I still have a couple months before snow fall in which to drive. Either the TR6 or the 914 3.2 Carrera… |

Yes , the Wurth aluminum washers are not good for nuts that are tightened above 8 ft / lbs . SSF sells good ones ,and so does Metric & Multistandard Components Corp . [metricmcc.com ].

Never had an issue with Wurth hardware. Mind you, they don't manufacture it, but not had any issues.

Bell Metric is also a good source... Prices are great, though I'm not really fond of their shipping cost which is around $10 no matter how small the order is. My guess is you're really paying for someone to pack them up as they come in individually labeled small zip bags.
If you're into the yellow zinc for steel bolts, they're the place. |

There is absolutely different qualities of aluminum, cooper and steel washers. We use AN hardware whenever possible (Coast Fab) but for cooper and aluminum we only use the hardware sold by Charlie @ Wrightwood Racing.

I think it was Bruce Anderson who mentioned that dead soft aluminum washers are not the ones you want for valve covers.
As for the 6mm vs. 8mm washers being the same, sounds like someone mislabeled the package. |

They usually don't count them, they usually weigh them. Scoop them onto a scale, pour more in or take some out until they weigh the right amount ( usually to a tenth of an ounce or so ).
I need sealing washers for the oil level sender, myself. |

Aluminum washers wanted
Yeah, I could use a few of the 'correct' aluminum crush washers also. If anyone has any extras, PM me, and I'll snail-mail you a stamp to snail-mail them back to me. $$ S/H charges for a couple of little BS parts, really 'aggravates' me! jt
