"0" vs. "1" timing gears ? mix or match ?
a buddy is building a 2.2L engine from random parts.
the factory parts manual lists 2 versions of the steel timing gear that lives on the crank. his intermediate shaft gear is marked '0' 1) is it critical that he use the corresponding steel gear ? 2) does the steel gear carry the same '0' mark ? input appreciated. TIA

No idea the answer, but is this ignition or valve timing? They made cars with Bosch snd Marelli distributors, maybe they had different drive gear?

Look in the factory workshop manual. The "0" and "1" gears can be swapped around to set the gear backlash. There's a chart in the manual.

What dannobee says, sometimes mix and match required to set proper backlash.

thanks guys... I'll check it out. BTW, are these gears stamped similar to the gear on the intermediate shaft ?

Yes, and the case is usually stamped, too. Near the fan housing and crank pulley.

You have to match the number on the case
0 or 1, I have either if needed. Bruce |

As Bruce says, the matching # is stamped on the case; example here:

This goes out the window once the case halves are flattened and align bored.

As does the distributor drive gear backlash. Although that would make a good time to update to EFI and COP or distributorless ignition.
