Timing chain guide rail
Hi,
I guess this chain rail is installed the wrong way. So here’s the question: what will be the consequenses running the engine with the rail this way ? I am asking because the rail is installed like this in a friends engine that already is in use. Cheers This picture is from when the engine was "rebuilt". ![]() Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Last edited by Classic 911; 05-20-2023 at 08:26 AM.. |

Just turn it around and carry on.

Does it matter?? Could it break? I’d make it right especially if it was my mistake. Parts for these motors are way too expensive. Any failure you’ll get blamed regardless.

Installing it backwards might create premature sprocket wear but it's doubtful.
Simple rule of thumb when installing chain rails in early 911 air-cooled engines is: The long leg points to the nearest sprocket.

It's possible to pop off the chain box cover and flip the rail if I'm not mistaken. Can be done at next oil change.

Get a new one ready because the retaining tab can break off on removal.
