Intermediate shaft surface question

I am cleaning up parts for a guy to build my 2.0 engine. Today I did intermediate shaft and two bearing surfaces appear to be a little marred. Part has the look but doesn’t snag my finger nail. Have not asked him but trying to anticipate what needs to be done.

Have it polished like they do to a crankshaft.

1. Do gears need to be removed for polishing shaft?
2. Typical cost to polish ?

The shaft in your pictures doesn’t look great. My new intermediate shaft bearing diameters were about the same as my old shaft. I bought a IS complete with gears which was special order and no returns. I might have been ok by just replacing the one chipped aluminum gear.

I think the gears could stay on, providing it is washed well after polishing. I’m not sure on the cost for this, but it couldn’t be much. My crankshaft was $90 to remove oil galley plugs and polish.

Take a good look at the aluminum gear teeth. They can be pitted as an early indicator it's time for replacement. You don't want one of those failing.

I ask because if you are removing that anyway, at least one of the small gears comes off too if memory serves.

Gears appear to be pretty nice…….but not shaft.
Appreciate the input.

Try buffing it out with a red/maroon scotch brite pad. Or start with a gray pad if you want to be a little less agressive...

Have it cleaned and polished like they do to a normal crank shaft pulley
