You can’t make this stuff up….
Opening a 70 T with unknown history and shock sets in.
Left side with 2 safety collars and chain idler against the chain box Right side with inverted cam gear, I doubt the chains were checked for parallel Heads were assembled without sealant and bolted way too tight. I think that looks fine.........LOL Just put rod collars on the tensioner and make them mechanical racing chain tensioners. I like the chewed up cam nuts, probably used a Crescent wrench. Why would you need sealant between the cam towers and heads, just torque them to 100 ft Lbs . No chance the cams were timed properly.
Keep us posted, especially when you split the case.

3 liter
No surprise . I purchased a 3 liter long block from a Pelican in Maryland last year who claimed he did some level of rebuild . The same seller had what he thought was a degree in Mechanical Engineering that was nothing more than a day class from a local guy in basic engine tear down and assembly . Fortunately we were buying the engine as a core . None the less I checked CIS cam timing immediately and found that it was at 2.5 vs 08-1.2 . I contacted the seller who told me his dial indicator was off . Funny stuff . So yes no surprise what you will find on engines / transmissions that are said to be rebuilt . Cheers

I had a “rebuilt” engine come into my shop with 6 base gaskets under each cylinder. The “rebuilder” put the pistons 180 degrees wrong and used base gaskets to shim the heads high enough to keep the valves from hitting the pistons. Also told the customer he was building him a 3.2SS but just reused the stock 3.0 p&c’s. There were other issues in the engine but that one took the cake.

Yep.....I had a 3.0 come in with the pistons installed upside down, too! Problem 1 of 100 on that one....

Well he'd be more qualified than the guy who only rebuilds OHV domestic stuff like a SBC.

The rest of the case hasn’t ever been opened
Just a couple streaks on bearings. Sent the T cams out for regrind to E. Got a set of 85 mm P&Cs to install when I get to that point. Bruce |

Wow, interesting thread and more than a little disturbing.
Don't know if it makes me want to put my engine together myself or hand it over to a pro to do it for me. ...and I thought I was really getting scammed when the core motor I bought (for the large port heads and sundry other parts) turned out to be a stock 3.0 litre and not the promised short stroke 3.2. The seller swore on a stack of bibles that it was a 3,2.....didn't really matter but I was annoyed. There is some amazing crap being sold out there.....caveat emptor I guess. D. |

Under the heading of "You can't make this stuff up"
I've seen almost everything you can do to a 911/930 engine. From butchery to artistry but what I found on BAT was a first after 40+ years and over 400+ rebuilds. Look closely and you'll see what looks like cylinder cooling tin/baffles installed up-side down..... ![]() ![]()

Well I'm surprised it appears it was running that way. How on earth the cylinders were cooled is a mystery to me.

Turbo engines move a huge amount of oil so, the cylinder are mostly used to cool the heads. 78- 89 3.3 turbo cylinders were almost fin-less anyway, so this one ran/runs with elevated head temps. Hard to see in the short term.
