3.0 liter-IT RUNS!Tiny leak.

Did my first start yesterday. I followed the directions carefully. Astounding! No blue smoke. Ran it after the 20 min 2krpm break in and I know why they bought these cars back in '78. It pulls hard to 5k. I don't remember it being the case before the rebuild as I have to tense my mid section from 3 to 5Krpm. I put the Elgin 330 grind in it and it is timed to 1.9. My kid was riding with me and he was getting tossed around on some corners and told me to slow down after I got to past 60 in second gear.

It gets up 5 k fast. I point to the boat tailing of the webs!

I better settle down.

Two oil leaks though. One is from the oil pressure sender unit.I suspected this since the cover of it was loose. I removed it and blew air around the crimped edge and oil came out of the tiny orifice on the threaded part.

The other looks like it is coming from around the lower oil cooler area. It's dry above the mid mark of the oil cooler. It looks like it may come from an area on the case that has some kind of notched void. In the void is some kind of sleeve. The oil trail fans out and down to the oil cooler's lower mounting. It is very slight. The engine hasn't made a drop of oil on the garage floor.

JB weld the notched void? Silicone? Anybody heard of this notch?

typical. clean the notch with brake clean and an air blower, and use JB weld. hold it in position with duct tape until it cures. there's two notches. in front of, and one under the cooler. you may have to r+r the cooler.

Still, relatively easy to do with the engine in the car. Congrats - doesn't look like any big (huge deal) oil leaks...

I opted to have this one welded since the case was apart anyway.

I have a 3.0 with a broken head stud and will be doing my first rebuild shortly. You bring good news to my currently uncertain world....

According to the previous owner, he took the motor out because it "had some leaks" and he never got a chance to work on it because his business got too busy. Of course he neglected to mention it had a broken head stud (or was it 2?). My friend bought the car and motor, told me it had some leaks and if I fixed it he would sell the car and we could split the profits. I wound up overhauling the motor. In the end the "profits" consisted of 2 Belgian coins we found under the pedal box.

Nice car! I'm in the same boat. Bought a sc off e-bay which was presented as in excellnt running condition. From a local guy too. 4 broken head studs! He said he hadn't noticed them when he had done the valve adjustment. I'm only going to do a top end as all the machine shop guys have said not to worry.
