What seals are in my seal kit???

OK, bought a seal kit for my 2.7 rebuild. Well it contains masses of seals and gaskets but no bill of material or cross reference guide.

Wayne's book does not show the seals on the hydraulic tensioners and I cannot find anything which looks like the seals I removed from them when cleaning.

Are these the seals (different color)?

Also, not sure if any of you have experienced this with your gasket kit but I had only 23 of 24 blue seals for the case through bolts. AND, I only had one of the supposed 2 large seals for the oil cooler and oil pump! Did I get a defective kit????

Thanks
Tristan

If the gasket set is from Reinz then the oil-fed tensioner o-rings won't be in it because those tensioners weren't stock on 2.7 models.
Yes, maybe some o-rings were missing, call Pelican.
No Reinz gasket sets come with a list of contents, yet something else the repair shops have to deal with.

Thanks for pointing that out. It makes sense but what about getting 23 of 24 blue through case bolt seals and only one of the large oil pump/cooler seals? I do have the Reinz kit.

Tristan, if you do a search you will see that I posted a thread where I had the same missing items you do. It turns out that if you use the rebuild wizard and order the gasket set it only sends you the top end set. You also might want to look and see if you are missing the #8 bearing o-ring and the flywheel seal.

I had the same problem with a 3.3 turbo set ordered with the Wizard... only got the top end set
Missing items were flywheel seal, #8 bearing/pulley seal, breather gasket, oil T-stat O-ring and intermediate shaft cover O-ring and all 24 thru case bolt seals. I hope there are no more missing.

Last I saw, the tensioner o-rings were orange silicone. Dunno what those white ones are.........

I have some spare oil cooler seals if you want them. I think I have two small and one large green Viton seals. Send me your address and i'll drop them in the mail right away.

Tristan,

Once you get an inventory, let me know if you are short. I have two boxes full of 2.7L seals. I can bring them with me on Sunday.

Tristan, I also have a couple of the green oil cooler seals and some case bolt o-rings that you can have for the asking. No need to order them! By the way, the extra case bolt o-rings are the far superior green viton o-rings!

You guys: Thanks for the kind offers. If I'd known I was going to get this wonderful response I wouldn't have ordered the replacements.

Chris, could you bring your 'goodie bag' with you?

Thanks again guys.

First of all, Tristan didn't order the gasket set through Pelican.

Secondly, I fixed the problem with the Engine Rebuild Wizard many months ago...

Wayne,

Because there is no check off list sent with the gasket kit and my rebuild process is going slow, I only just discovered that some gaskets were missing last weekend. Pelican has since fixed the problem and I am getting the last few seals that I did not get. Thanks!
I think that although the problem is now fixed in the Wizard if someone (like myself) added a gasket set to their Project List before the fix then subsequently ordered it, then the fix was not reflected in the order. I find the project list extremely useful and tend to add things to it many weeks before I actually order. The rebuild is going smoothly thanks to your book... check out my other post "Assembly Begins"

Wayne,

No need to be so defensive. I have the same kit as you sell, I'm just astounded that there is no bill of material in the kit. Also, respectively (because I have a signed copy ), your book does not display all the seals. For example, the seals that are used on the hydraulic tensioners are not photographed. I do understand the magnitude of the task that you have undertaken and appreciate your efforts. No one is perfect though and these gremlins will creep in. Entropy is everywhere - it's the law!

Thanks for your help
Tristan

PS. I have spent a considerable amount of money at Pelican and hope you weren't suggesting anything about my purchasing habits. The market is the market and market forces will always apply.

I've been looking at those things for weeks wondering where I forgot to put them!

No idea!! There's a bunch of seals and gaskets that I cannot ID. I have a MFI setup so that may be part of it.

Porsches are not model airplanes. There will not be a list of materials or detailed instructions included with most purchases. Look up my post expressing frustration with the cam tower lines, nuts, and ferrules- I definitely am feeling your pain. To further confuse matters, there are, as a general rule, plenty of extra and/or unused items that come with the 'kits'. I have not run across any kits with missing items, but am sure there have been plenty shipped!

As an interesting counterpoint to the "gasket kit" arrangement, I know of a few people who do not order the gasket kits at all - rather, they know exactly what seals etc. they need for their rebuild and order them 'a la carte'.

I've spent plenty with Wayneco this year - but have also spent tons with my local wrench. They have been an amazing resource, just as is this board. So I try to split my dollars between them and Wayneco. Kinda helps though, that the local wrench gets daily deliveries from WorldPac and SSF and free shipping. Makes those "oops I forgot one gasket" moments much easier (and cheaper) to deal with locally.

I understand that BUT having consulted exclusively in the Aerospace and Defense Aftermarket (i.e. repairing and overhauling aircraft, engines, APUs and components) I know that it is good practice to have a complete BOMs available in repair kits. All I'm saying is it would be nice to have this. Wayne's book almost got there but is missing a few parts. Not a big deal but enough to make you scratch your head every now and then.

All this does is perpetuate the 'tribal knowledge' syndrome which Wayne's book is trying to debunk!

Unfortunately, the automotive business is not like the aerospace industry. None of the gasket manufacturers that I am aware of supplies a BOM with their sets. Parts frequently arrive, without any markings or part numbers and technical information and updates can be inaccurate.
That is the way it is, if you have a complaint, I would write to ALL of the vehicle and parts manufacturers around the world as they are the guilty parties. Pelican and other resellers are not likely to include BOMs with gasket sets for the simple reasons that it would take too long and be too expensive. You may also notice that a lot of resellers have stickers stating that "Cannot be returned if opened". Therefore, no dealer is going to open a set to check it and then not be able to return it if the customer declines the part. We too, deal with the major wholesalers and returns are a fact of life.
