Just for my own thinking, I wanted a checklist to install my particular new rings the same way.

I wanted to be sure the oil spring break ("Joker") stayed opposite ("backward") of the ring (which surrounds and "holds it) gap holding it. (The spring reminds me of a joker's hat.) The oil ring gap staying toward the top ("Crown, in this case, meaning cooresponding to the piston valve large relief cutout" 4-7 Wayne's book)

The second #2 ring, on my pistons, the ring gap I coorespond toward the number 2 side of the piston, which is stamped on the right side on my pistons. So 2 gap to the 2 side.

And then the #3 top comp. ring on my pistons, the gap cooresponds to the E (stamped on the piston) left side of the piston, which is opposite to the 2 ring. So "#3 to the E side.

Last, I double check that all rings top stampings face the "top" of the piston. 4-3 Wayne's book. (photo above does not show the bottom small relief cutout due to the magnifying)

Rings rotate when the engine runs so aside from installing the rings up side down you can hardly make a mistake.
Space the gaps so they don't all line up and you're go to go.

hmmm, how about disconecting the clutch on a G50 for engine removal ?, as far as I see it only covers a cable clutch. (101 projects)

Hmmm, I'll leave that one alone. To clarify - everything is included in my "Engine Book." The 101 Book is a compromise book that couldn't possibly include all of the info that you would need for all cars 1965-89.

Henry and snowman are right - the rings to rotate in the grooves when the engines are running. Still, it's best to start them out opposite from each other with the oil ring on top.
