Split the case today, such a shame...

.....that I have to go into this engine. Due to my mis-shift and bent valve issue, I'm rebuilding my130,000 mile engine. I split the case today, and to me, the main bearings and crank looked great. In fact, the only visible sign of wear was the layshaft bearing. Oh well, it'll be "better than new" when done.

i hope you can find that set of layshaft bearings. kind of scarce at this moment.

It would seem that way....our host lists them for like $8, then when you try to add to cart, they go to something like $40 for one of the pairs, and the leadtime is indefinite. I think I've found them elsewhere, however.

The bearings in my 87 930 looked very similar @ 20yrs old and apparently over 150K miles.....

I was totally amazed. I was almost a shame to do all of this work for 1 cylinder leaking 20% thru the exhaust (the motor had never been apart) and some oil leaks, but I 'should' be set for 20 more years once it's back together.


This was the dirtiest motor I've ever owned - it was basically embarassing - the PO must have ignored leaking oil for many years....

kellcat: That thing was dirty, but the case looks sparkling in the after pics. What did you do to the exterior?

After I get the crank and heads stripped down, I'll be into it for some cleaning prior to machining. Then, when they come back, more of the same.

I stand corrected, I could use a set of layshaft bearings...my source thought they had them, but were mistaken.

Edit: False alarm, got a set here in Dallas.

Done with disassembly!!! The rod bearings all looked good as did the crank journals. So, I'm pretty please with what I've found inside.

1. Parts washer cleaned and filled....check!
2. Various brushes on hand......check!
3. Ready to clean a bunch of parts.........check!

Ed, if you are shipping the heads out take the time to get some 1/8 plywood and bolt the heads to it. 3 on each sheet and them put them in the box. That way they can not bang into each other and mark up the sealing surfaces.

I had a set of 3.6 heads nearly ruined by UPS that were packed tight in a box with cardboard between them. Now I use the plywood trick so they can not move around.

Jeff: Great tip. I wasn't going to ship the heads in that box, just trying to keep everything grouped together. I'll be spending a bit of time building shipping fixtures for the crank and case too.

For the crank you an use either a big PVC pipe or a sonnet tube. Wrap crank in cardboard before placing into either tube. I have shipped a couple of cranks that way.

Well, I'm past due for a progress report. I've got the short block chunks shipped off for machining. The case will take the longest @ 6-8 weeks, so it went first. This gets me into probably sometime in July to start the actual build barring any unforseen events.

Ed,
I have a 3.2 with 47k on the clock and the engine has never been out. It's pretty fresh but my oil changes also show bronze particles...more than i think should be there. I had the oil tested by blackstone labs after about 500 miles of use. They said it looked typical of that motor with 4500 miles on the oil but with wear on the high side. They said I could have a problem developing or slight excess wear could be coming from oxidization from sitting. Did you have your oil tested? What did they find?

I'm having the case inspected....hopefully no machining.

I did have my oil checked, it came back as no issues, just a slight bit of oxidation. Actually, there was no concentration of metals, and I think they checked for 17 different metals. The oil was tested by a friend who is a chemical engineer at an oil company using his sources.

Ed, I guess this means I am not going to se you at the Memorial day weekend DE. We'll miss you.

I am still enjoying my Buckley rebuild. It is nice to be able to push the engine without worrying about the rod bolts or head studs letting loose. I am sure you will feel the same way when you are done. Take your time, and I will see you in the fall.
