Broken Cylinder Fins

I just got a set of reconditioned 95mm cylinders on exchange from an extremely reputable shop. All but one were perfect, but one has a few small pieces of the upper fins missing. I think it is just fine to use, but I wanted to run it past you folks. What do you all think?

In my opinion:

It will be ok. If you have the pieces you could use a little liquid metal to put the pieces back on. Not perfect but it will work. If you dont have the pieces its not the end of the world. (cylinder will have a hot spot)

I wouldn't use it. I don't know what the loss of cooling is, particularly in light of the fact that the factory itself used half-fin cylinders (a disaster), but it's just not a good idea to put a known broken part back into an engine you have gone to the trouble to tear down and rebuild.

If it were a four-cam Carrera part that was unobtainable, it might make sense to fix. But a spare cylinder shouldn't be hard to find at all.

Hi Jeff:

Those fins are missing from the hottest running part of the cylinder and I would not use it. Its hard enough keeping these bores round at operating temperature and the missing fins at that juncture will accentuate ovality when hot.

You can see this by observing hot leakdown figures after its been in service for awhile,......

Just one person's opinion so take it for what its worth.

Steve's opinion is worth alot IMO. I guess for me it would depend on the application. You don't say what kind of engine or type of use you have in mind. For a street car stock SC I would use it if I didn't have an easy alternative. For a race motor or turbo motor I'd find another one.
