Please help me spec. my engine

I need some input to spec. my engine so I can start to source the needed parts.

Here is what I have:

3.0 SC engine (US) with matching heads (biggest ports). Cylinders/pistons KS/Alusil. 4 broken studs!! crankshaft same engine.

Here is what I want:

New cylinders/pistons (higer comp.)
PMO carbs (yes I want carbs)
New camshafts to match

The car is mainly going to be used on the street, but only as a fun/weekend car.

Pick a 2000 RPM rev range where you want the engine to be strongest -- what is that range going to be? Figure that your torque peak RPM will be at the bottom of that range, and the peak HP RPM will be at the top of that range. Note that your desired rev range will often be a function of the gear-box that your running, and the spread between the gears. A close-ratio gear-box will allow you to keep the engine on-cam better, which will favor a higher rev'ing, "peaky" race engine. If on the other hand you need to use the stock street gears, moving to such an engine may result in a performance reduction on the track.

What sort of fuel octane do you want to run?

Based on those two givens, you can then...

1) Pick your cams
2) Pick your CR
3) Pick your porting strategy
4) Pick your induction/carb strategy
5) Define how radical your bottom end needs to be

I'd go with one of the "spec" engines described in Anderson's and Dempsey's books. There's lots of info about these engines so there's little reinventing the wheel. Something like this:

Nikasil cylinders with Mahle or JE pistons
911S or equivalent aftermarket cams (Dougherty, WebCam, Elgin, etc.)
9.5:1 single plug
10:1 twin plug

.....plus numerous options in most every nook and cranny of the engine, inside and out. It helps to have a starting budget to set parameters. It's better if you have an unlimited budget.

DIY or checkbook? It makes a world of difference if you're on a budget.

Include the above books in your research. A set of factory repair manuals is helpful too. You'll have hundreds of suggestions here.

HI Pingo ,
are you looking to build something like this ,

the spec' on the engine is;
SC bottom end,
98mm pots/pistons, cylinders by perfect-bore, JE pistons 10:5-1,
SC heads,
DC60 cams, from Dougherty Race Cams.
PMO manifolds/carb's
Xdi ignition from Clewett Engineering.
SSI heat exchangers,

the engine is not fully set up yet and will post you the rolling road info when I have it , at the moment it is very drivable and pulls well.

ho and it is in this!

regards mike

HI Pingo
You will have to contact "Alan.UK " for the Spec' of the PMO's as it is his car, I was just Twin pluging the heads for him and fitting the 2nd set of plug leads, changing the cams.

You might consider an engine like the one I built for my RSR clone.

Another RSR Clone Project - Dyno Day

I spec'd this motor just like jluetjen described. I am using close ratio gears for 3-5. This engine is very streetable and can pull easily and smoothly from 2000 rpm and really breaths from 4000-7500 RPM. Runs on pump gas with no problem.
