help

Thanks Mike.

So I found the old studs from when I sent everything to Ollie's. But I need some help figuring out which inserts I put which stud in.

Here's a picture of the case:

And here'e a picture of the studs (I know they're not all studs for the tranny):

I know the insert at 10 o'clock [1] gets the long stud [1] becuase the starter is mounted there. But I don't know where the other ones go.

Anyone have any ideas?

Landon

This should help you to figure it out.

I used 3 M10x80 and 1 M10x110 studs. Looks like you're missing one the same length as your #s 2 and 3.

Thanks!

This forum is awesome. Thanks for the help guys.

Definitely appears I'm missing one. I remember one of them backing out during disassembly. Since I've moved, gotta rummage through the garage to find it.

This thread rocks!!!

I will be starting to reassemble my 70 2.2E soon. (Disassembled by PO). The engine is actually going back into a 72 Targa (also done by the PO, or one of them). I have so many questions and most of them have been answered in the last 5 pages. Thanks!!!

PS. Your pistons and cylinders look just like the ones that are on my 70 2.2E engine. Not to say they are the stock ones, because I really don't know what might have been put on there. Did you ever find out for sure what they are? What is the serial number on your engine?

Pistons

They are S pistons. Search the forums for Tom1394. He has a great guide to pistons (and great info on lots of other stuff too). If I can find it, I'll drop the link here for you.

I'll have to look up the engine serial number tomorrow in my log book. Will post if you're interested.

I'm still trying to decide what to do to make the pistons work. I need new (or reground) cams and the MFI will need tweaking. I found a cam guy somewhere that can grind my old non-S cams into something that will work with the pistons. I also found a guy who can do some work on the MFI. I'm sure there's other stuff I need to consider but I'm not fully committed to making an S engine although it has to be getting close.

piston ID

Actually it's tom1394racing and here's a link to one of the many posts he's put up on piston IDs.

911 piston casting numbers

search the forums under engine rebuild and technical and you'll find lots more.

Great. I'll check that out.

I am just doing an inventory of my parts since I know the engine has been rebuilt before and I have no idea what they did to it.

Landon,
Look-up what casting number your heads are that will go with your 2.2S pistons. Tom also posted a data sheet for head #s -- see if they are T,E,S the the port size.

Wilco Scott. I'll check this weekend. I don't believe in my tear down, I noticed anything special about the heads. But that was back before I became so smart on P engines...

Assuming they're not S or even E heads, what's the penalty (or consequence) for running T heads with S pistons? Betting it's not insignificant.

No updates. Been bogged down at work and coaching T-ball. Crank is ready for the case as soon as I get around to it. Arrrgh. I need to get back in the game on this.

Update/Question July 24th

Question for all who've done this before: I've got the case half mounted on the engine stand. Need to clean it next. Ollie's did a great job but I know there's more to be done.

Has anyone used a pressure washer to clean their case? Obviously I'd follow up with some Brake cleaner etc. But, does a pressure washer (dialed down to a lower pressure setting) get at least part of the job done?

Also, anyone have any "timing chain holding fixture" workarounds? Looking for some common tool chest morsel that I could use instead of buying one.

For a "timing chain holding fixture" workaround you can use a coat hanger bent into the correct shape.

I can't believe it's been a year...

...but I finally pulled the case out this weekend and started to put it together. Discovered one of the intermediate shaft bearings I ordered from a Pelican super-rebuild kit didn't arrive and had to re-order it.

Anyway, if anyone is still out there, I'm going to get back at it. Hopefully finish before I retire from the Air Force!!

p.s. anybody from the Antelope Valley in SoCal?
